Half Crashed?

Since upgrading to Windows 7 my computer has been sort of crashing on me, allow me to elaborate. After being idle for 15-20 minutes the mouse will still work, the time stays accurate, and I can open menus( but I can't access anything therein). I've tried setting all my sleep settings to never sleep. I also tried fixing from the windows 7 disk. I would be happy to wipe my whole disk and start from scratch but I dont have an XP disk, and my Windows 7 is an upgrade disk, so I don't think I can install it on a clean drive. Any ideas would be appreciated, thanks.
