Various issues with BSOD's - Windows 7

Greetings. Unfortunately I've been experiencing a number of issues with my new system and to be perfectly honest, I'm a bit lost as to the cause. Fresh installation of Windows 7 (x64), latest BIOS and mainboard drivers installed plus latest versions of drivers for the rest of the subsystems. Initially my rig came with a Radeon 5850, which is basically where the problems started.

At completely random intervals, I would get a grey screen with vertical white stripes and the machine would either reboot automatically (with a memory dump, indicating a serious error) or simply lock up after the stripes appearing and I would have to do a hard-reset. The issue was kind of rare at first, so I didn't pay much attention to it, but at some point those crashes would occur every 10-15 minutes basically making it impossible to do anything with the PC. Each and every time I would get the "crash", a 0x00000124 bugcheck error report would be created in the event viewer (dumps : 011410-15724-01.dmp, 011410-15475-01.dmp and 011410-15553-01.dmp).

Attributing the crashes to a faulty video card and/or drivers and since the video card from my previous system (an Nvidia MSI GTX 260) was in perfect working condition and had served me well for quite some time, I decided to swap the Radeon card, after removing the Catalyst video drivers completely (using Driver Sweeper). The new card booted immediately and fine and just as I was running the installation program for the new video drivers (freshly downloaded from the official website), I got a BSOD before the program had a chance to complete (dump : 011410-23618-01.dmp). I probably tried 1000 ways to install those drivers, including (but not limited to), booting into safe mode, removing any traces of previous installations (with Driver Sweeper where needed), running the driver installation in safe mode, only to get BSOD's when trying to boot Windows 7 in a normal way (dumps : 011410-16692-01.dmp, 011410-28329-01.dmp, 011410-19796-01.dmp, 011410-19593-01.dmp, 011410-15412-01.dmp). After removing 1 stick of RAM from the system (running with 4 Gigs instead of 6), I tried installing the driver again, it did BSODed eventually but not before actually installing the necessary files (except PhysX I believe, which I installed later on, by hand).

After that point and until this moment, the system has been stable and I'm basically able to run both applications and 3D games like a charm with no noticeable issues. Doing a little research on those dumps myself however (with the help of the BlueScreenView utility), I opted to download and create a bootable DVD with Memtest86+, in order to run a memory test overnight and identify any potential memory corruption (since the dump reports seem to indicate something wrong with my sticks, I think...). After 6 hours and 30 minutes of testing (approx. 6 passes), memtest wasn't reporting any errors (with all 3 sticks of 6 GB plugged in that is), so I decided to check the hard drives for errors, hell I even did an "sfc /scannow" just to ensure the integrity of the system files. Nothing abnormal whatsoever.

I have a suspicion that a couple of USB external devices that I usually always leave connected (an old HP scanner and a logitech mx 700 mouse) might have been the actual culprit due to maybe drivers that Win 7 don't like for some reason but I haven't been able to verify this (at this point I'm too afraid to do anything that will threaten the stability of the system). I'm also not entirely sure that my memory isn't faulty.

Would appreciate any insight, suggestions etc.

Thanks in advance.

I have highlighted the only driver/program where the Advisor gives me an exclamation mark, yet I'm puzzled since I use the latest (downloaded) official NIC driver provided by ASUS (since my mobo is ASUS). The weird thing is, Windows 7 suggests that I install another Marvel Yukon driver (as an optional update) provided by Microsoft. So, what do I do ?

Windows 7 Ult, Windows 8.1 Pro,

I would try the Mavell site. Marvell: Support

And update this driver.
Marvell Miniport Driver
version 11.10.5.3

Old driver version as per 2008R2 install:
NDIS6.2 Miniport Driver version 11.10.5.3 (pre windows 7)

New Driver from Marvell:
NDIS6.2 Miniport Driver version 11.10.10.3 for Windows 7 (64 bit). You need this one.

I can't seem to find those drivers on the Marvell site unless I have the exact chipset or network controller number from your board. Looks like... 88E8062 or something close to that. When you get the right number you can find the download on the Marvell site.

Windows 7 (x64) RTM

88E8056 according to device manager. I downloaded and installed the
Windows 7/Windows Server 2008R2 (64 bit) 11.23.3.3

version of the driver, which should be compatible with Windows 7 x64 and rebooted. The optional
update Microsoft suggested disappeared and device manager confirms that the new driver is
installed (dated 1-8-2010). In Windows 7 advisor everything checks out now.

I'm still worried though for potential future issues. Are you absolutely positive that my dumps
did not reveal anything more substantial ?

The Dump file is reffering to Memory Corruption so please follow the below steps

Run the Memory Diagnostic & HD Diagnostic
Also i would recommend to run System Integrity Checker

Start > Run > CMD > Right Click and Run as administrator > SFC/ SCANNOW

That's what I thought as well. I completed one pass of memtest86+ with 0 errors but I will leave it overnight for 5-6 passes again.

SFC/ SCANNOW
doesn't report any issues and I've downloaded the WD HDD diagnostic utility which I intend to run after the memory tests. A thing I noticed, after I entered the BIOS (after the BSOD) was that my memory timings were all set to Auto. As a result my sticks that are rated @ 1333 7-7-7-20 1.65v were running @ 1067 7-7-7-20 1.5v. Is it just me or is that RAM voltage too low, since I've heard that certain Asus Mobo's are especially picky about DRAM voltage. Should I change those settings to the memory manufacturer spec, before running memtest ?

I certainly would try that because it could easily be part of the problem.

All right manually set DRAM voltage to 1.65v and DRAM bus to run @ 1333 with manual timings of 7-7-7-20. Fast forward 6+ hours running memtest (overnight), revealed no errors on 6 passes, which didn't come as much of a surprise, since the previous memtest didn't reveal any errors either.

Also downloaded the Data Lifeguard diagnostics utility from Western Digital to check my hard drives. First interesting observation here, one of the hard drives reports the SMART status as failed (more specifically the "attribute" reported as failed to pass the test is the "Multi Zone Error Rate"), yet the drive appears very much functional. It's basically an older drive that doesn't really carry any important or otherwise vital or unobtainable piece of information, it's not a system or boot partition and doesn't have a pagefile. Running the "Quick Test" on all the drives checks out (even on the one with the failed SMART status ), I'm going to run an "Extensive Test" (which I reckon is a surface scan) later on.

System has been stable with no BSOD's since yesterday *knocks on wood*. At this point I'm on the verge of pulling my hair out, since the "issue" appears to be random or at the very least doesn't seem to be triggered by any specific "action". I'm still not entirely sure if I can trust Memtest 100% or the memory "required" the extra voltage since I believe (in theory at least), it should function even if "underclocked". The only other thing that comes to mind, is either a driver issue, some piece of software (antivirus perhaps ? I'm running BitDefender) that behaves in bad ways on occasion, bad or loose SATA cables (?!?) or ultimately an incompatibility between the RAM/video card and the mainboard itself (which I find unlikely). I guess I will continue to monitor the situation for now.
