Frequent freezing and CHKDSK at startup
Ok, here's the deal.
First: My Asus laptop running Vista x64 began freezing unusually, when I was doing simple things like saving an image, or nothing in particular. These required a hard reset, and when starting the computer afterward, it suggested running CHKDSK. I did so, but the problems continued with increasing frequency.
Then: I got a Windows 7 upgrade from the offer for college students. It seemed to have fixed the problem, but after maybe a month or two, the same issue started again. This continued with increasing frequency until...
Now: CHKDSK asks to be run on every startup, however it freezes when the countdown reaches 1. After hard resetting a few times from this screen, it skips the countdown and runs CHKDSK. After letting it finish, I am able to use the computer, but it could last anywhere from a couple hours to freezing as soon as I open a program.
I have tried chkdsk /f in the command prompt, but this still freezes when the countdown reaches 1 (and the problem isn't getting chkdsk to run anyway).
Possible cause: It got turned off while installing windows updates back on vista and more recently while defragmenting (I tried twice and both times it froze at 41%)
I've attached the minidump, though I don't know if it's relevant.
What should I do? I've got my files backed up so I'm fine with doing a clean install if you think it'd help. I'd hate to have to take it to someone because I feel like I could just find out what to do online for free and I don't trust that they'd actually fix it.
