Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit hangs when installing games This problem has been solved. Quote: This is my first post on the forums so hello everyone!
I hope you can help me find the problem that's causing my system to hang to the point where even the cursor stops responding and I have to do a hard reboot. No BSOD whatsoever, just a complete halting of everything.
The hang up does not present itself with every game. Just to name two of them: Armed Assault and EVE Online. I have had this problem on Vista and now with Windows 7. I do manage to install Armed Assault but when applying a patch to it the system hangs.
My somewhat thorough troubleshooting has made me come to the conclusion that this hang up is caused by large files or large compressed files. I actually had a hang up today when I was trying to extract a 2,5 gig zip file. Since EVE Online is a single file download (that's the one I was trying to extract after unsuccesfull install attempt) and the Armed Assault patches are huge single files this might be the problem. I need to know what's causing the hang up on large files so I can continue playing EVE Online.
Where should I start looking for the problem? What info should I provide to you?
Thank you in advance!

Thank you in advance! Hi and welcome
We need a bunch of info. we can start off by helping you generate a DMP file from you hung process. use these to genereate and upload it. http://www.sevenforums.com/crash-loc...g-process.html
If you have no other choice but to force boot, you might waant to see if the hangs happen in safe mode (F8)
Eventually we are going to need you to go into event viewer and see what is logged there,

Thanks for the quick reply!
First of all, I can't start up the Task Manager when this happens. EVERYTHING freezes. The keyboard and mouse too. Well, First the installer freezes, then I can't click on anything in the taskbar and a few seconds after that the mouse stops responding.
Next, this happens on safe mode too. Well, happened on Vista anyway before I had 7. After I post this, I'm going to go to safe mode and try it on 7 too.
On a (un)related note: I had a problem with large video files too when I was jumping back and forward the video. I had BSOD's but I think that's fixed now 'cause I can't reproduce the BSOD anymore. The fix was to disable AMD External Event Utility from services.msc
Now this problem that I have was present before and is present after this fix so I think it's unrelated. Thought this was still important to say. | My System Specs | | OS Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit CPU Intel Core2Quad Q6600 @ 2.40 GHz Motherboard ASUS P5KR Memory 2x1GB Kingston and the Part number is KTC1G-UDIMM Graphics Card ASUS EAH3870 - ATI Radeon HD 3870 512MB Sound Card On board HD Audio device Monitor(s) Displays HDTV Thomson 32LB125B5 at 1360x768 resolution PSU Corsair HX620W Hard Drives Internal: Seagate 1TB

Just a wild guess - but since those files are so huge, you may run out of pagefile space. Increase the size of your pagefile - maybe that helps. Also, try another program for unzipping - e.g. 7zip. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number HP, Dell, Gateway, Toshiba - 4 laptops and 2 desktops OS Vista, Windows7, Mint Mate, Zorin, Windows 8 CPU from 1.6GHz Duo to i7 Monitor(s) Displays 2x HP w2207 Keyboard with trackball - no mices Mouse Trackball mice Hard Drives 5x HDD, 7x SSD, 12x Externals Internet Speed DSL 6000 |

Following some guide I manually set my pagefile minimum and maximum to 3.0x the amount of my RAM. Well, the system actually is faster but during installation of EVE Online, the system still hangs up.
I'm getting a bit frustrated here.. | My System Specs | | OS Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit CPU Intel Core2Quad Q6600 @ 2.40 GHz Motherboard ASUS P5KR Memory 2x1GB Kingston and the Part number is KTC1G-UDIMM Graphics Card ASUS EAH3870 - ATI Radeon HD 3870 512MB Sound Card On board HD Audio device Monitor(s) Displays HDTV Thomson 32LB125B5 at 1360x768 resolution PSU Corsair HX620W Hard Drives Internal: Seagate 1TB

After five hours of "sleep" I'm slowly coming to the conclusion that the problem lies with my Samsung IDE hard drive. It's about six years old so maybe it's failing one small step at a time and that's what causing most of the trouble. Need to buy a s-ata drive. | My System Specs | | OS Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit CPU Intel Core2Quad Q6600 @ 2.40 GHz Motherboard ASUS P5KR Memory 2x1GB Kingston and the Part number is KTC1G-UDIMM Graphics Card ASUS EAH3870 - ATI Radeon HD 3870 512MB Sound Card On board HD Audio device Monitor(s) Displays HDTV Thomson 32LB125B5 at 1360x768 resolution PSU Corsair HX620W Hard Drives Internal: Seagate 1TB

I hope this is my last post. Downloaded 7zip and extracted the problem file with EVE online on different partition on the same disk. Extraction worked fine and I can now run EVE. Thanks to you two who tried helping.
P.S. I still think that my HDD is going nuts so I'm going to buy that new s-ata drive ASAP. | My System Specs | | OS Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit CPU Intel Core2Quad Q6600 @ 2.40 GHz Motherboard ASUS P5KR Memory 2x1GB Kingston and the Part number is KTC1G-UDIMM Graphics Card ASUS EAH3870 - ATI Radeon HD 3870 512MB Sound Card On board HD Audio device Monitor(s) Displays HDTV Thomson 32LB125B5 at 1360x768 resolution PSU Corsair HX620W Hard Drives Internal: Seagate 1TB
