You are having a problem because your back up is too small. 9 GB is not enough.

Read this for some ideas on how large the restore partition should be, 30gb minimum is suggested.

For the other questions, I do not have the expertise to offer any meaningful help.

i know this is a pain in the ass, but can someone check all their folder registry values against mine, and tell me if it differs in any way...this is driving me crazy.

    starting with hkey_classes_root\folder to shellex:

    deciphering cbs.log

i ran a sfc \scannow to see if i could fix my problem with folders opening in new window, but it still didn't solve the problem.

the report said some of the problems were not fixed.

here are the failures and errors it found:

2010-01-29 21:55:37, Info CBS SQM: Failed to start upload with file pattern: C:\Windows\servicing\sqm\*_std.sqm, flags: 0x2 [HRESULT = 0x80004005 - E_FAIL]
2010-01-29 21:55:37, Info CBS SQM: Failed to start standard sample upload. [HRESULT = 0x80004005 - E_FAIL]
2010-01-29 21:55:37, Info CBS SQM: Failed to start upload with file pattern: C:\Windows\servicing\sqm\*_all.sqm, flags: 0x6 [HRESULT = 0x80004005 - E_FAIL]
2010-01-29 21:55:37, Info CBS SQM: Failed to start always sample upload. [HRESULT = 0x80004005 - E_FAIL]
2010-01-29 21:55:37, Info CBS SQM: Warning: Failed to upload all unsent reports. [HRESULT = 0x80004005 - E_FAIL]

SQM: Failed to read RptTime time value from registry. [HRESULT = 0x80070490 - ERROR_NOT_FOUND]
    2010-01-29 21:55:45, Info CBS
SQM: Failed to read RptCount count value from registry. [HRESULT = 0x80070490 - ERROR_NOT_FOUND]

as i suspected, i'm missing some registries...could this be why my folders won't open in the same window, and if so, how can i fix this?

    Hello Fatbottoms,

You can download and use the Folder download option in the tutorial below to restore all of the default Folder associations to make sure it is.

Default File Type Associations - Restore

    Hope this helps,

in applying the default folders, after i extract the zip folder, there is no .reg file, just another default file.

is this how it should be?

does it matter where i save the files...i saved the zip files to user/download then extracted there and opened the file which then gives me a warning, then says it has successfully added the file.

i did this for cmd, reg, folder, directory, and exe to no avail...still can't open the folders in same window.

When you open the downloaded ZIP folder, drag and drop the REG file in it to the desktop to extract it from the ZIP folder. Afterwards run the REG file, and click on Run, Yes, Yes, and OK when prompted. :)

i extracted the reg file by right clicking the zip folder and extracting it to the download folder...isn't that the same thing?

anyway, i did it like you said, but when i run the reg file, i get a run ok and yes, not two ok's...does this matter?

does anyone know what registry these error not found messages refer to:

SQM: Failed to read RptTime time value from registry. [HRESULT = 0x80070490 - ERROR_NOT_FOUND]

finally fixed the problem with a repair install which wasn't that bad.

i don't know whether i should post another thread, but i have some other unrelated questions from this topic.

does a system restore affect an external hard drive at all, if all i have on the external drive is music and movies...should i turn on the system protection for my external hard drive?

No a system restore will not affect what is on the external hard drive. It only affects what's on the C: drive. When you do a system restore you have a option to see what all it will affect. See step 8 in the tutorial below for more on this though.
