Windows 7: The desktop icon mystery

The desktop icon mystery

Here's the problem, after a brief explanation:

I bought a new HP computer this month with Windows 7 installed. Worked fine.

I installed Quicken 2007, worked OK.

I had an HP Pocket Media Drive connected 75 GB worked fine.

Quicken sent me a letter telling me that in April they would no longer support 2007 and I should upgrade. I did. Bought the new software on line for $29 and change. Worked fine.

But I have a second computer. I contacted Quicken Tech Support yesterday on the chat line and they gave me a download copied to CD for my backup computer. I installed it and worked fine.

This morning all of my desk top icons has the big W Microsoft Word. I have 19 desk top icons. 18 were the big W. The 19Th was it's original and it got me on line. The other 18 icons opened Microsoft Word word processing.

I phoned HP tech support and got a pleasant, well intentioned female in Hyderabad, India. After Mickey Mousing around for 1 1/2 hours we went no-where. I thanked her politely and wished her a good day.

I use a Microsoft wireless keyboard which has a button that when pressed puts me on line to my home page MSN. COM. Works fine, gets me on line.

I have Norton security, Ran scans and found nothing.

Ran Windows 7 compatibility and it came up negative, no issues.

I can't exactly tell you what I did but by perusing various options and opening various windows I did find a listing of all files and clicked the Quicken QW file and it opened ! Later it would not open.

When clicking around I cannot open any desk top icons now. But my Microsoft keyboard with the little house still gets me on line ?

When I go to "All Programs" and click the Quicken it will not open.

Not to confuse the issue but I bought a second HP Pocket Media Drive 250 GB and connected it 2 days ago. Then backed up all files. Now I get messages referring me to the K drive. I don't have a K drive. The Pocket Media is a J drive ???

My little Indian tech support companion said it was an issue of resetting something. But I haven't figured out yet where to go.

So far as I know I do not have a hardware issue. I do not have a virus *( maybe ). And I presume that I simply have some problem with some settings which I haven't as yet located.

I'll wait for your able comments with thanks.

What WERE the shortcuts on the desktop that "morphed" into Microsoft Word files?

Good Luck,
Captain
I phoned Hp tech support again and was on the phone for 1 hour.

Don't ask what happened, I am clueless. All that I know is that I tried system restore on my own and it did NOT respond in Windows 7. However by manouvering with HP tech support we made it happen . We reset all to 01-31-2010 and the desk top icons all came back and worked

Note to self:

There are now 32 days in January. LOL
*Sure it's just a typo, but thought I'd make a "funny" out of it. *

Glad to see that you have successfully fixed the issue.

More info.m

This morning I booted up and everything is normaL.

Checked my E-mail and HP had sent this:

Windows 7 Stops Responding or Becomes Very Slow After Connecting to the Internet HP Pavilion p6207c Desktop PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

Since I see many posts here with the blue screen BSOD I decided to post it. Hope it helps someone.

Hey Guys more info.

Just to inform my computer colleagues, today I received two phone calls and one E-mail from HP concerning my problem. They are all over this with exceptional determination.

Sorry friends but I must explain that I buy ONLY HP products exclusively. This may sound like a sales spiel but it is not.

Over many years HP as treated me in an absolutely commendable, honest way and I have been honest with them. I give them a #10 in every respect.
