Here you go: WD Support > Downloads > SATA & SAS > WD RE3

Download those Data Lifeguard tools and run an extended test on your hard drive.
The smart data checks out however DLG hangs as soon as I start the test. I'm not convinced my problem is with the hard drive though as I've already swapped it out with a known good drive from another system and I'm still having the same problem.

For some reason DLG hangs but my HD just passed HD Tune's error test. I'm at a loss here, I've had no CAPI2 errors in the last 24 hours but my system froze up again today with the same screech/static sound coming from the speakers. To recap:

RAM passes 3+ passes of memtest.
CPU passes Prime95 overnight and AMD overdrive stability test.
    PSU rails test good.
    I've swapped out video cards.
Drivers are all up to date.
I've reinstalled windows and tried a repair install.
HD passes HD Tune error check.
    DEP is turned on.
    I've also RMA'd my motherboard.

    Anything else I can try?

I hope this isn't consider necroing, but I have the same issue while playing games (only have Mass effect 2 and atlantica online installed at the moment). Randomly while playing them, it would also just freeze, and I can hear and constant static or screeching sort of sound if I have my speakers on, then would need to press the reset button to restart. It also never happens when I am not playing a game. I also have Windows 7 64 bit as well, and read somewhere that this might be caused by Creative sound cards. I have one installed as well and is currently trying to use the motherboard sound instead and see if it gets fixed. Hope this might help you too :P

If it pertains to the issue, then it's fine. Besides, it's only 3 weeks old - barely cold in the necro world

There are a multitude of possible reasons for hard locks + sound looping/'screeching', be it software related or h/ware related.

Starting with driver elimination is the best way to start.

If that doesn't work, that's where the 'fun' really starts...

I'm not using a Creative card, and my system can lock up when gaming or while web browsing, sometimes when just sitting idle. Still haven't resolved the issue. The only parts I haven't replaced/rma'd are the psu and ram. They both test good, not sure if I should rma them anyway.
