Laptop Freezing after Windows 7 install

Hi

I installed Windows 7 on a Packard Bell igo 6204 laptop, yesterday, which worked fine for half an hour, then would repeatedly freeze after each forced restart.

I have tried reformatting the drive and reinstalling the original XP, which now has the same freezing symptoms. It took 3 attempts to reload XP as it would freeze midway through installation. It works ok in safe mode, but immediately crashes when I restart in normal mode.

Any ideas?

Regards Terry

Welcome!

Does the XP freeze too now? If so, that seems to indicate a hardware problem. Perhaps you could test your RAM and hard drive.

Hi thanks for prompt reply

Yes XP freezes the same as 7 except in "Safe Mode"

I thought it could be hardware, so have swapped the ram, to no avail, but there was no problem before the windows 7 install, which seems a coincidence?

Who knows, maybe your hard drive was not healthy, and all the extra writing to the disk during the install pushed it over the edge.

Try what brand hard drive do you have? Hit the link in my sig to download Speccy.

Then look online for the manufacturer's diagnostic software, or post here and I will find it for you.

Many thanks for the "Speccy" link, its an Hitachi drive, so I am downloading the diagnostics tool now.

It may be a stupid question, but could the Windows 7 install, have corrupoted the BIOS in any way, or is a hardware fault the only possibility?

Its my grandsons computer and is getting on a bit, so the hard disc must be pretty tired.

I don't think it is possible for a program to corrupt the BIOS like that...
