Black Screen Of Death

I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit on my main hard drive, with XP Home SP3 on my second hard drive as a backup. A couple of days ago I had to use system restore in Windows 7, which seemed to go okay until it rebooted and I got the normal welcome screen and then the Black Screen of Death. I have tried all the Advanced Options, Repair your computer Safe Modes etc but every time I end up back at the BSOD. I cannot do a Repair Install as I cannot get into Windows 7.
Has anyone got any ideas on how to fix this?
Thanks for you help.

Boot from the dvd and do a repair install from there.

On the How to Do a Repair Install to Fix Windows 7, which I printed from this site it says that you can only do the repair install from within Windows 7 and as far as I get is the BSOD. Is there something I am not reading correctly.

Thanks.

You can do a repair install from the dvd. Wouldn't make sense to have a repair you can only use from within the broken OS.

the only thing i can suggest is try to get back into safemode and try system restore from there. if you can go back at least two days before you starting having the problem. you may have to reinstall some software and readjust some settings though. a small bit of advice, system restore does not always like to work in normal windows. i have had it fail more times than not, however after that if i go into safe mode and do it it works every time. good luck.

Is there a link to somewhere on this site that tells me how do the repair install from the dvd. The section from Windows 7 - Repair Install that I reffered to reads:-

Warning
  • You can only do a repair install from within Windows 7, you cannot do it at boot or in Safe Mode.
  • You will not be able to do a repair upgrade install in Safe Mode.
  • The Windows 7 installation DVD that you use to do the repair install with must be the same or newer updated version of Windows 7 (ex: Windows Updates or SP level) than the currently installed Windows 7. If the DVD is a older version, then you cannot do a repair install with it.
  • You must have at least 8.87 GB of free space, more if you have a larger installation, on the hard drive Windows 7 is installed on to do a repair install.
Thanks again.

As I said in my intial Post I can not get into Safe Mode it starts to run, and then I get the BSOD again.

Thanks.

if you did a fresh / clean install how many programs would you have to reinstall once 7 is loaded?

The reinstalling programs is not the real problem, it is the emails, word documents and downloads that I would loose with a clean install.

Thanks.
