Brand new computer - Disc read Error

Hi all, I have searched and found several threads relating to this but none seemed the same so bear with me if I'm inadvertently repeating myself.

I bought a new computer about 2 weeks ago (Windows 7 32 bit Home Edition) and the other night I left a USB key drive plugged in when I shut down the machine. The next day on boot up I get a "disc read error has occured - Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete to Restart" error message. Even though the USB drive has been removed this error message appears and restarting just brings up the same message. However if I press F8 before this error appears I get into a boot menu and if I select the main boot drive the machine boots normally. Any ideas as to whats wrong and any suggestions as to what I can do to repair it would be greatly appreciated

    Welcome!

In your BIOS, make sure your hard drive is set to be the first to boot. If you have a CD in the drive, be sure to take it out.

Hi Jonathan_King and thanks for the reply and welcome. I will try the BIOS when I get home, there was no CD or DVD in the drive and what I don't understand is how this happened. The other thing that I found strange was that the Boot Menu listing the various drives had a number of entries for Flash drives that were not plugged in. Is it possible that this list needs to be cleared in some way?
