Let Laptop Battery Die, Having Logon Problems

So I have a stock Dell Inspiron 6400, and this weekend I left it on overnight without the power supply plugged in. I woke up to find the battery at nearly 0% and the desktop frozen, and was required to force shut it down. After rebooting, the computer ran disk checks, memory checks, and attempted to repair the problem. No problems were detected, and the memory seems fine. I could then reach the Windows 7 logon screen and logon. Taking about twice as long as usual to load, it then proceeded to a blue screen with only my cursor. I could open the Ctrl+Alt+Del menu, but trying to access the task manager only resulted in the blue screen with cursor and being locked out of further ctrl+alt+del access. Furthermore I am able to start the computer in any safe mode and all of my files, programs, etc are saved and accessible, and I am even typing this from my laptop as we speak.

Windows 7 was provided free of charge through the university I attend, and so I have a burned copy of the install disk with which I attempted to boot from and restore. Trying to restore from both the hard drive and from the install disk say that I have no restore files saved. I am pretty sure I should have at least one, as I installed Windows 7 over 6 months ago and have updated and installed numerous programs since.

I have a desktop for necessary school work, and so the repair of the laptop isn't a major concern, though it still needs to get done. I feel like it has something to do with the memory as the computer ran out of battery while still running, but then again I am in these forums for a reason. I also would prefer not to reinstall Windows 7, as the programs and files seem perfectly intact.

If you need more information about my system, let me know what, and where to find it. Note: I have not backed up my system with the Windows 7 backup tools, but I do have copies of all my necessary files on an external HD. Thanks.

    Welcome

If you can work in safe mode, this should diagnose the problem

How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

So I ran through the clean boot instructions. Even after disabling all the unnecessary start-up options, logging on still brings me to a useless blue screen and cursor.

Anybody have any ideas. I have also run a full system scan with Windows Security Essentials, with no threats/viruses/etc.
