No Signal crash when playing DVD

Need some help on this one. When I go try to play a DVD, my screen goes blank and my TV shows the input banner like it lost signal. Computer still running, but I have to re-boot to get screen back. This is happening thru media center Play DVD. I downloaded PowerDVD9 trial to see what would happen. Same thing happens, blank screen and I have to reboot. I'm thinking it may be a codec issue?

A little more background: I did have everything working correctly last week. The other day I installed a Dix codec pack so I could play blue ray rip movies. That did not work, so i downloaded sharks 007 codec pack. the blue ray would play but not the DVD. I would get a application crash. I ran the sfc /scannow and that corrected some registry issues and everything worked, including playing DVD's. Then the next day DVD's would not play again and I would get the black screen. Windows media player would play the dvd's however, but not media center. So I did a system restore back to before when all was working. Re-installed media browser plugin, and sharks codec. Now i'm back to the black screen when trying to play a DVD or a blue ray rip.
