Computer restarts automatically

Hello,

I have installed Windows 7 Ultimate on my comp for 2 months now. Before, everything worked fine but for the past couple of weeks something weird is happening. My computer restarts for automatically for no apparent reason. Sometimes when i play a game, it restarts or sometime just surfing the net causes the comp to restart. It happens any time in the day and i don't understand what the problem is. After it restarts i get the option of starting windows normally or in safe mode. I choose start windows normally and then it works fine. But today it happened twice. After restarting, i was surfing the net and it again restarted. So, i decided to post here.

Please help me with this. I hope this is not a serious problem

Thanking you

Hello cooldude1234;

One possibility is the Windows 7 Release Candidate (beta) has expired and now will shutdown without saving every two hours. Please see what version of 7 you are using?

If you do not get any error codes or a BSOD (blue screen of death) then look at the log files (type logs in the start menu search box) to see what is shutting down the computer.

Cheers!

Exactly same thing is happening to my computer also, sometimes the computer simply shuts down & sometimes it restarts. What can be the issue?
After restart i see the following messages in logs:
Critical: The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.

Is this hardware problem or software problem? Will updating windows solve this? Please help as I'm tired debugging this problem.

But then why cooldude is also having the same problem? Though for me the timing of restart is not fixed...

A failing power supply is not something you can predict when exactly will it fail. Most of the time, when you load it, it failed (when playing a 3D games, watching youtube, etc)... Or maybe the power supply is on the verge of death, it just fails whenever it wanted to... Mostly because of dried capacitors...

Errr... naveenu, what would that bring you? If what I suspect is correct, plugging it to another UPS won't help, and the symptom is pointing to a failing power supply:

Critical: The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.
So unless your APC UPS is failing miserably, this sudden power outage won't be caused by your APC UPS.

I don't think its a hardware problem. The computer keeps running when the computer shuts down, moreover vendor checked the power supply & it is fine. I saw in other blogs people experiencing the same problem as mine. Please find the error message from the logs immediately after the crash:

Does anybody have any clue what is happening. Windows 7 has really screwed my peace of mind.

Did the memory test, it did not say any problem, it passed successfully & even drivers are up to date.
I called up MS tech support, he disabled some 3rd party services & did clean boot etc from MSCONFIG.
Now the problem (either crashed standby/ or auto restart)occurs after running for 2.30 hours.
But still the problem is there.

I see a definite time of this happening now, it happens after running for 2.30 hours.
Any clue for this conundrum
