Boot corrupt run out of ideas
After lots of attempts at Startup Repair, I finally got a message to say that "C:\boot is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility"
Since the PC won't boot, I can't get to any "normal" windows screens, just a startup repair or new installation from the installation disk.
Found how to do chkdskwith help from messages on this forum to get to the command prompt (thanks), only to find that chkdsk can't repair because the partition is write protected.
A bit more digging around here suggested running bootrec from the command prompt. /fixboot option appeared to be successful but still couldn't boot, so tried /rebuildBCD. This resulted in "successfully scanned Windows installations.
Total identified Windows installations: 1
Add installation to boot list?" to which i replied "y"
Next message is "The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.
Any suggestions on what to do next?
