Administrator user service profile failed log on

On my home pc I log on as the administrator, with no password, and have two other accounts for my daughters (who are sensible creatures and only ever log on as themselves to talk with friends / play games / watch and listen to music).

Last night, for about the fourth time that day I tried to log in and this time I got the message 'User service profile failed log on'.

Unfortunately I have WinPatrol which checks every time one alters the pc, and will not let me set up a new user profile when I log on as daughter a or b. Since I have no password I just click return, as normal, but the exercise is aborted. (I can't even burn a cd). I am waiting to hear from them how to suspend Winpatrol, but I imagine they are asleep (I'm in Europe)

Using a (recent) rescue disc I have gone back a couple of days to a restore point, but it found no errors and still the log on failed.

I really, really don't want to reinstall 7 and then the upgrade to ultimate all over again, with associated loss of this and that. Any bright ideas please ?

I hadn't been doing anything more significant all day than using Excel and Word as well as Firefox to check the weather forecast.

If your daughters are not set up as administrators then you cannot create a new user profile.

You say that your account is setup as administrator. You could create the new user profiles from there.

Call the new users test and test1 or whatever.

Then copy the folders from your daughters' current profiles to the new test folders respectively.

These folders are found at c:\users\daughter-a and c:\users\daughter-b.

The new folders would then be c:\users\test and c:\users\test1 to correspond to whatever user name you created.

You will now have two new users that are mirror images of the originals. You should be able to login to either one.

Once you have convinced yourself that everything is the same delete the old user folders (daughter-a and daughter-b).

Delete the old user accounts (daughter-a and daughter-b) from your account.

Rename the new user folders to what they were originally (daughter-a and daughter-b) and create the user accounts (daughter-a and daughter-b) anew from your account just as they were before.

Everything should be the same as before.

nickle - sorry I didn't make it clear: my account is the adminstrator's account and that is the one where the log-on fails (in retrospect maybe I should have given my daughters administrator's rights as well, but they're only 9 and 12...)

Shawn - thanks a lot for this, together with its further references it looks if not promising at least possible. I'll give it a try. Andrew = adj

Hi Shawn, yes it worked - I was hesitant about trying it (what little me change registry keys ?) until you nudged me - thanks.
I imagine you are the same Shawn as wrote it - well, thanks for sticking around and helping us dimwits out of the mud we've got ourselves into.

I take it nobody knows how this could happen to a previously nicely spoken and decorous young computer ? - i.e. stop it happening again ?

Best wishes, adj

You're most welcome ADJ. I'm happy to hear that you got it sorted. Yep, I'm the same one that wrote the tutorial. :)
