| | Hangs and BSODs, maybe related to standby? Hello, I have been experiencing off-and-on hang-ups and BSODs on my HTPC over the past few weeks. I initially noticed the problem after the computer went into standby mode (either I'd put the computer into standby or it would go into standby after the set amount of time had elapsed) and when I returned to the computer, the power indicator was lit (i.e. out of standby) but the screen was blank and the computer was unresponsive. Sometimes, I'd find that the computer had rebooted itself while it was unattended and I'd see the "unexpected shutdown" error message. I changed my power settings to always on, but I'd still occasionally get the unexpected shutdown messages. Most recently, I've been getting more and more BSODs: during start-up or when coming out of standby, sometimes it would start up fully but within a few minutes, I'd get a BSOD, sometimes a BSOD loop and I'd just shutdown and walk away. I've dabbled into looking at the minidumps and event logs. The event log mentioned an issue with Microsoft Security Essentials, so I uninstalled and reinstalled that. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to make much sense of the minidumps. One mentioned memory corruption, so I ran the Windows Memory Diagnostic tool and it didn't find any errors. I'm currently running Memtest86+ (so far one pass without errors, but I hear it's good to let it run for several hours). I ran the SF Diagnostic Tool and attached the results. I did have to remove the memory.dmp file from the ZIP in order to meet the max file size for attachments. Thanks in advance for any help you might be able to offer. | | Welcome! I do see memory corruption as one of the causes. I suggest running Memtest for at least 5 passes, more if you have lots of RAM. I also see netio.sys as a cause in one of them, which, as you can guess, is a network driver. I suggest updating your network card drivers too. In addition, you may want to run a system files check. Open an elevated command prompt and enter sfc /scannow. |

Mike EDIT: System specs in profile I run Dump files and checked the Logs that was posted. I guess the problem is with your Video Card i.e. nvlddmkm.sys. I would recommend to Uninstall the existing driver completely follow this link for instructions Info: nVidia Driver Cleaning Guide - Overclock.net - Overclocking.net and download a fresh copy from the nVidia website and install them. Uninstall any third party antivirus or Firewall installed in your Computer and see whether that makes any difference. Download Malwarebytes and run a complete scan. | | Hello again, Thanks for your help. I followed your suggestions and the system was stable for about a week. It then started crashing again, sometimes with BSODs and sometimes freezing. I've attached the results of another run of the diag tool (like last time, I removed memory.dmp to meet max file size). Here were your suggestions from the last time I posted and what happened: Memtest: no problems after five passes HD diag: no problems Network driver: latest already installed HDMI audio: installed driver Video: updated driver ATI TV tuner: updated driver BIOS: latest already installed Malwarebytes: no problems SFC: no problems Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated! | | Hi there, Thanks for responding so quickly. I ran the Furmark test. At default settings from the Furmark website (fullscreen, msaa none, 1280x1024, 1 minute), the benchmark score was 220 with max GPU temp of 68C. I ran the stability test at 1920x1080 for 15 minutes (an amount of time I found recommended on another site) and didn't experience any problems. The max temp was 72C. I also found that updated drivers for my video card were released recently, so I updated those too. I'm going to let the computer run without going into standby for a while and see how it goes. |
