Thanks for the link. I do not use any 1394a card as far as I know, but I installed the hotfix anyway just in case. It's possible that the second HDD I have in my laptop internally uses 1394a. Let's see how it goes...

Windows 7 Professional 64 bit

I have the exact same issue. I haven't found a total solution but I have been able to replicate it simply by accessing the offending machine on the network while it is sleeping. I watched it carefully and the PC wakes, the monitor activates but with a blank screen and then seems to go back to sleep normally after the network access is stopped. However, once the network has done it's thing, the machine hangs and is no longer available on the net. So, I went and checked the other machine that does not have this problem and I found that it was set to not allow the network to wake it up. I have since configured the new machine to ignore network calls while sleeping and we shall see if this helps.

To try this yourself got to:

Control Panel>Network and Internet (sub menu: View Network and Tasks)>Connections.

Click on whatever connection is listed then choose "Properties" on the dialog. Now, click "Configure" and select the Power Management tab. Unckeck the box nest to "Allow this device to wake the computer" and click "Ok."

This is a fix that will limit network functionality but it's better than hard booting the machine every time you need to use it.
