BLACK screen of death, very bizzare

    Hello all,

I've been having a strange problem with my new PC.

two days ago I got a new PC,

    It has-
    -HD4850 Radeon
    -Intell E6550 Dual core
    -Asus P5Kpl/epu
    -Artic Power 700w
    - Windows 7 Ultimate
    -120GB HDD SATA
    -500GB HDD SATA

So anyway, my friends and I set the PC up, no problems, install windows 7 and it's working fine,

I take it home and start installing things like MSN, Firefox, Windows Updates, the usual. Until, after a window 7 update it asks me to restart, so I do, it get's past the Asus motherboard BIOS screen than just hangs on a black screen, no mouse cursor, nothing.

I than try entering safe mode, however the option cannot be found what so ever, no matter how many F8s I press etc.

So I get the win 7 disc and it let's me enter safe mode (well Vista CE) however I cannot system restore or anything, so my friend and I wipe the HDD it's installed on, and do a fresh install.

I take the PC home, I'm downloading and installing things again, it's fine, I download the ATI Catalyst Centre, restart and it hangs on the Windows is starting screen, so I turn it off and on again, it tries to 'repair' the system, restart and again I get the black screen AGAIN.

I have no idea what to do, I've tried taking out both bits of ram at diff times to see if it's that, it still hangs, I've tried using one moniter and dual-moniter, it still hangs.

    I'm out of ideas,

If any of you can spare the time to help me, I'd be extremely greatful, thanks for your time,

    Lui

I suspect the video driver. You have to remove all traces of the current driver (the extras especialy) that need to be removed then get a fresh copy and install it.

luii, did you manage to see the glowing orb animation? the swirling windows or something? I forgot how it looks, I use verbose boot message...

Edit: usually, after ASUS bios, there should be a "resume" page flashed right before it loads Windows... did you see the "resume" page?

Your problem is similar to one I was having - see my thread posted about four hours ago and see if it helps to fix your computer.

Hey ColWar, thanks for the help, I took a look at your thread, it does sound similiar indeed. I went to the ASUS website and downloaded all the latest updates for everything except the BIOS (not sure I want to mess with that just yet), I also installed windows on a different harddrive, just incase it's that.

We'll soon find out, thanks everyone, may be back! Let's hope not :)

Okay, it's been 3 days on this build and it hasn't died, I would consider myself 80% chance of fixed.

Whether it be because I switched out the HDD or because I updated all the motherboard stuff, I don't know, but either way I hope people come across this thread who also have the same problem and try some stuff in here.

Thanks to everyone for helping, you guys do a great job.
