    recovery on Dell 1745 Studio


    I bought a Dell 1745 Studio with Windows 7 in January. I played with it and try out different programs etc - basically experimented to see what programs I wanted and didn't want. Anyway I decided to do a Recovery to Factory Image. this was 2 days ago. I updated a lot of bios, drivers etc from the Dell site but I think maybe I should of been more selective about what I updated because I am now haveing huge problems with IE freezes along with Windows 7 freezing up. So I am wondering if I could do another recovery and be a lot more selective about my updates etc. Would this use up more memory or as I was told Window 7 doesn't use up extra memory. Also I am not a gamer I use it to design quilts, watch videos, etc... Please can someone help me out - THANKYOU......VERLON56

    Hi Verlon and welcome to the Forum
    Before doing another restore try going to the manufacturer of the various components for driver updates rather than using the Dell site. To get a complete detailed list of all your components download and install the very good free Belarc advisor from here: Belarc Advisor - Free Personal PC Audit
    This will give you all the detail you need.

    Hello verlon56, welcome to Seven Forums!



    I used to do what you are doing with an HP desktop and I found after trial and error (mostly error) that the "updates" that are offered by the PC manufacturer were mostly not needed at all; were I you, I'd do the factory re-install and not add any "offerings" unless it was obvious they were needed.

    I would certainly do what BFK suggests but I assumed that when you did the first Recovery that was when the problems occurred leading you to try the updates!

    When I did the recovery I just automatically did the updates because well just because I thought I had to I believe this was an error in judgement on my part - The other thing that I did was downloaded a system utility program from cnet.com because I thought it would help with better performance. But it might of added to the problem I now have. Another thing I wonder if you might give me some ideas on why when I turn on my laptop it takes so long for it to boot up once and even get to the logon screen and right after the logon screen? Do you think it all has to do with new recovery updates etc........Thank you for your input.............

    If you start again and do a new Recovery then it should put your machine back to its' optimum. I would forget any third party software to boost performance. There are lots of things you can do to improve the speed that your machine boots up for instance by reducing the number of applications in the start up. Lets first get your machine back to its state when it left the factory and take the rest one step t a time. If you are in any doubt as to what programs you need then you probably don't need them. There is a temptation to load all sorts of stuff up onto a new machine and it just takes up valuable space, chances are you will never use 99% of it. If you are in doubt about any particular program just post here and somebody will give you the pros and cons. It would help if you filled in your System details. Download the Belarc from the link previously given and then go to your User CP right at the top of this page and click on "Edit System Spec" Fill in all the details as shown in the Belarc analysis page. Again if you have any difficulties please just post here and one of us will help.

    After you get sorted again do as mitchell65 suggests and work on trimming the (factory installed) programs and applications that start automatically when the PC is started, the tutorial at the link below is a convenient, easily understood way of doing so, have a look and take your time as there is no hurry at all to sort it out and above all do only one change at a time with re-starts in-between to make sure they'll be no problems.

    Good Morning i can't tell you how much I appreciate your help and the fact that you actually have people who help and do not treat you as being a nusience like at the dell forum. I am going to work on this and I will get back to you. Also I went to monitor the compter for excess resource usage and as far as that goes I am looking pretty good.
