BSOD Help request

My 7 Ultimate pc gets a blue screen about 1 to 2 times a day. There does not seem to be any apparent pattern that I can see to when this happens. I attached the minidump. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

A check of your Bug Analyis indicates that a program used during the BSOD might be the cause of your problem. A further anlaysis indicates that Zone Alarm may have been in use. If this is the case, please disable zone alarm and see if the problem continues.
A driver that was the most likely cause is the cdd.dll driver.
Any corruption should be repaired with a sfc using an elevated cmd prompt (type cmd in search right click when it appears on top and run as administrator (then type sfc /scannow
Always run an antivirus test as a virus can hide itself in drivers.

There are many old drivers in system, they should be updated

A problem of this nature should be tested by a memory test. Download and use memtest86
Furthermore the driver verifier should be used to test for bad drivers.

KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED_M (1000008e)
This is a very common bugcheck. Usually the exception address pinpoints
the driver/function that caused the problem. Always note this address
as well as the link date of the driver/image that contains this address.
Some common problems are exception code 0x80000003. This means a hard
coded breakpoint or assertion was hit, but this system was booted
/NODEBUG. This is not supposed to happen as developers should never have
hardcoded breakpoints in retail code, but ...
If this happens, make sure a debugger gets connected, and the
system is booted /DEBUG. This will let us see why this breakpoint is
happening.
Arguments:
Arg1: c0000005, The exception code that was not handled
Arg2: 96246abb, The address that the exception occurred at
Arg3: b9a3388c, Trap Frame
Arg4: 00000000

Hello Jbigg:

This particular blue screen was probably caused by cdd.dll which is the Canononical Display driver. there is a hotfix available for win 7 and server 2008. You can read about it and download the fix here.

Microsoft to patch ‘Canonical Display Driver (cdd.dll)’ vulnerability of 64-bit Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows Server 2008 R2 for Itanium

If that does not fix the problem you can also run a system file check to repair your system files.

It is run by typing Cmd in search. Then right click and run as administrator.
Finally type SFC /scannow. (note the space between SFC and "/")

Let us know the results and if you need any additional assistance.

Jan

Since I'm running 32 bit Win 7, does that make the cdd.dll problem less likely?

Both Rich and Jan are correct. The Cdd.dll hotfix is a known problem and your drivers are really old. I would do both if I were you. Truthfully if I were you I would do a clean install to update all the drivers and get rid of the other old files.

Good luck

Ken

EDIT: It would also help for future reference if you filled in your system specs (in the lower left corner of any of your posts)

Thanks

I will echo Ken. Old drivers and windows 7 do not play well together. You don't have to be concerned with secdrv.sys; it is OK. Those 2006 and older drivers predate Vista. I would either uninstall or upgrade the programs these drivers are associated with and make sure the old drivers are deleted.

Thanks for all the replies. Since Friday, I've downloaded the latest drivers for my sound card. I have not had a BSOD since the one I posted the minidump for so I have my fingers crossed. I did run the elevated SFC and it reported that there were no issues. I had run memtest86 a little while back and it did not turn up anything. I'm going through the list of older drivers but finding what they belong to hasn't always been straightforward. One in particular, spssys.sys has eluded me. I can't figure out what it's for. Actually doing a search for where it's located on my hard drive has actually come up blank. I'm a little stumped with that one. I'm thinkng that some of my problem may just be because I'm running a motherboard that's almost 4 years old (ASRock 775Dual-VSTA).

We all hope that the problem is resolved. If not just repost with the new dump file and we will continue to review the problem.
