Windows Logon does not load anything

Hi,

I got this uncanny problem.
When I booted into Windows, and logged in into my account, suddenly the screen turns all black. This is not the black screen of death cause I can still use the CTRL+ALT+DEL, like the pic attached.

And when I run a new task in the task manager, specifically explorer, the background with all the program on the desktop appears again.

When I check it at View Event Logs, what I get is warning with event id 4006 (see attached file)

Is there something wrong with this?
Please help.

Hi jemping,

- Is your PC on a domain or is it a standard homegroup?
- Is your IPADDRESS issued automatically? or is it static?
- Lastly is you internet connection on the PC shared?
(if you'd steps to anything, I'm happy to elaborate, just let me know )

Event 406 is a DNS error and the above questions are related to that directly. However the DNS issue itself may not be the cause but rather the result of the real issue.
- Are there any other events your event log that talk about explorer not loading?
- Have you made any recent changes?

Other stuff that you can check (in no particular order):
  • REDUCE STARTUP PROGRAMS THAT MIGHT BE HANGING: Type MSCONFIG in RUN or SEARCH and press ENTER. Choose a selective startup and on the start-up tab disable all programs that start during boot that are not critical.
  • RESTORE: To a System Restore back to before the issue occured
  • CHECK WINDOWS INTEGRITY: An SFC /SCANNOW to check that the windows system files are all legit
  • NEW USER PROFILE: Create a new user and log in, see if the issue occurs on this user. If not import all of your user data to the new account
  • IS EXPLORER SET TO START: Check that Explorer is set to autostart by Opening Regedit and navigating to HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon. Look for a key called 'shell' and double click on it. It should say explorer.exe. While your there check that the AutorestartShell key is set to 1 (this makes explorer restart if it crashes).
  • VIRUS? Run a full scan to be rule this out
  • DISK CHECK: Run a checkdisk to ensure that there is no disk corruption

Good luck

-Timo

I solved this problem. ^^

I followed this and I found that my userinit value in the registry had been changed.

So, I changed it back, and viola, it worked as usual.
