Error upon booting: sprtcmd.exe - Bad Image

    Hello, WSF ^__^

A family member's computer gives this message upon reaching the desktop:

    sprtcmd.exe - Bad Image
C:\Windows\system32\WINNSI.DLL is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support.

Alternately the error may contain the same body but with this heading:

    dsc.exe - Bad Image

Simultaneously the computer's network has completely ceased function. Going to the Network and Sharing Center is no help. Underneath of "View your basic network information and set up connections", this appears:

    Unknown
The dependency service or group failed to start.

I've tried finding the file WINNSI.DLL, downloading another from offline, and cp'ing it to the system32 directory, but that requires admin privileges, which the glitch seems to stop me from having >.<

Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Worth trying the free version of Malwarebytes if you can it to run.

Otherwise, visit a specialist malware site for help with that.

These things can be very hard to pin down and eliminate.

If there is a recent backup image of the drive -save yourself a lot of time and restore it.

    C:\Windows\system32\WINNSI.DLL

Has to do with networking, sprtcmd.exe - Bad Image seems to point to a registry problem. My 1st suggestion would be to boot into safe mode and run a repair install. As registry error are very difficult to repair, and can have numerous underlying causes. It's likely the corruption is preventing you from doing the things you usually would to investigate.

A repair install will leave all your files and folders intact. This would restore normal operation if the underlying problem is no longer present. This could be an infection, but more likely it's a registry problem.

    Hi obbcabob,

Glad a repair install did the trick.

It would be a good idea to make regular backup images of the drive - there are several free versions that do a great job.

Restoring an image gets you back to the exact situation at the time the image was made, so if you do one every week , for example, it will always be a very recent point to return to.

Assuming the o/s and installed apps. are on one partition , and other data is kept on separate partition(s), making and restoring an image of the o/s partition will probabaly only take 10 mins or so.
