Windows 7 keeps crashing

I purchased a new Dell Vostro 1720 which came with Windows 7 in December of last year. Since early this year, it has been crashing repeatedly. I called Dell regarding this and they ran a hardware diagnostics (I think) and said it wasn't a hardware, but a software issue, and thus it wasn't covered in my warranty.

This is the error I keep getting:

From the first parameter in your post it appears to be some kind of memory exception but we cant tell until we can examine the DMP file.

Fifty DMP files would take a considerable amount of time so I am analyzing the 5 most current now. I will be back with the results soon

The five most recent crashes (and I suspect the rest as well) were caused by Pool_corruption. Pool corruption is a memory problem and you can test yours by downloading a free third party application called memtestx86. You should burn it to cd, and run it for at least 5 passes.

Any errors will become quickly apparent.

I also noticed that in several your Avast anti-virus is mentioned. I would remove it and install Microsoft Security essentials in its place.

Are you using the free or paid version of Avast? Jan is of course correct. MSE doesnt seem to have as many BSOD's as the other AV's.

Avast is on the good end of the spectrum.

Zig - Using the free version of Avast. What is MSE, BSOD and AV? I am not familiar with the abbreviations. "Avast is on the good end of the spectrum" - Does that mean I shouldn't uninstall Avast?

NSE= Microsoft SEcurity Essentials. MS's equivilant AV.
BSOD=Blue screen of death. generated when the computer crashes. A distinct shade of blue.
AV= AntiVirus application

Nope you have to burn memtest to cd, because it runs outside of the operating system and needs to boot from the cd.
