    Can Anyone Help Me?

Let see if I can explain this right because I know nothing about computers.
I sent my laptop in for repairs and they used my vista recovery discs to reformat the hard drive, and that wiped out my installation of Windows 7, when i got the laptop back I reloaded 7 back on it.
I reloaded all my software without any problems, but I started having problems when I retrieved all my info that I had backed up in my Western Digital external hard drive. Now when I go to reboot the laptop it will shut down normally but when it restarts the windows 7 logo will show and then the screen will go black telling me that it needs to check the drive for corupt files and will have a count down of ten seconds for me to press any key to cancell disk checking, if i dont touch any key then it will count down to the number 1 and stay on 1. The laptop will show that screen for approximately 20 minutes and I can also see the hard drive lights flashing as if the hard drive is doing something. After 20 minutes the screen shuts off but the computer is still running with the hard drive lights still flashing. No matter what i try to do to it after that I can get no response and am then forced to do a hard shut down ie-hold down power button.
I can get it to restart/boot up as long as I do push any key during the countdown. I tried to go into system restore and revert the drive but when I do it says that I have errors and corrupt files and that i need to correct that problem before I can do a restore, and obviously the disk scan needs to be done on a reboot which sends me full circle to the same issue as described above.
I have carefully searched around the computer for help, I even installed Tune Up utilities to see if a that third party software problem could fix my problem with the Disk Doctor tool.
I am at my wits end with this and am wonder if there is any type of answer to this issue. I really dont want the files corrupt even though I can actually get the computer to boot up and bypass a disk check. Is there a way to get the computer to shut off the disk checking at boot up and at the same time let me use the Tune up utilities to do the disk check instead?
Thanks for any info regarding this issue.

I tried that just now, it still does the disk check on boot up
I even went in and verified that the download merged and it did

Check both the hard drives with the manufacturer's diagnostic tools.

Thanks everybody! you have been a massive help to me and have saved me a butt load of problems and worries because this is my only computer and I rely on it for my graphics school.........and I FIXED IT!!!
I basically used a combination (cant remember exactly which steps I took) of ideas that you all submitted for me, it rebooted and actually did a disk scan again but this time it actually was showing me all the steps it was taking through all its stages.
What i think happened is since I had Tune Up Utilities scheduling a disk scan and repair before I shut off the Windows scan, that when it rebooted it actually didn't do the Windows scan but proceeded with the Tune Up Utilities scan instead, but then again what do I know? I am just a computer novice.
Once again everyon,,,,,,Thank you all so much, I really appreciate it.

James .. Happy that you have solved your problem. I also think that you should try Theog's suggestions on manufactures hard drive tools. This may have just been a warning to you that something is wrong with your hard drive. You need your data and your PC for schooling so best keep good back ups. Good luck to you!

thanks I appreciate it, I for sure am going to keep a good back up on mainly my work and images from school, this computer has 2 and a half years left of the warranty and so I am not going to do much to it so that it will still be covered.
I bought an extra three years on my warranty from Sams club and over that last month it has totally paid off. I sent it in complaining about how unsatisfied I was with the display, and when I sent it in they took real good care of me on this laptop even though they had to reformat the hard drive with my vista recovery disks. But this time when I got the computer back I only did an upgrade to windows 7 and things actually have worked out better this way because before when I first put Win 7 on it i did a clean install and that really messed up a lot of HP functionality that I liked having before.
Now that i have this disk scanning problem fixed this thing is working perfectly(knock on wood)
I will check out that hard drive stuff as mentioned earlier though.
