Windows 7: Trying to pin down a 0x124 BSOD

26 Jul 2010   #1

Win 7 x64

Trying to pin down a 0x124 BSOD

I am trying to pin down a 0x124 BSOD on the following system:

AMD Phenom 9550 Quad-Core 2.20 GHz
8gb Corsair DDR2 Ram
Windows 7 x64
3x WD 750gb+ HDD
GeForce 9800 GT 1gb

It has happened only twice, and only in the past 2 months -- the first time I thought it was a fluke, and then it happened again this morning

Both times I have experienced the BSOD, Event Viewer shows it as happening in the very early hours of the morning (this one at 4 AM)

The only process I have running then is usually a Mozy backup, but I have at times run Mozy backup for 24/7 up to a week at a time without trouble - so I do not believe it is related to that

Overall my hardware has been stable - I run my computer through several graphics and CPU intensive processes daily and it has been fine for over a year

Here is the Windows Error Reporting description
Code:
Problem signature:

I then went and got the Debugging tools, and ran it through the debugger - it didn't provide much help

I plan on:
- Reinstalling my GFX driver, and Audio Driver
- Running a memtest again (I ran it with the first blue screen I had over a month ago, and it returned with 0 errors)
- Flashing my BIOS (although I think it is already the latest version)
- Running disk check

In the mean time I would appreciate it if you could look at my crash dump - maybe you can find something I missed

Download a copy of Memtest86 and burn the ISO to a CD using Iso Recorder or another ISO burning program. Boot from the CD, and leave it running for at least 5 or 6 passes.

Do a CPU stress test as well, using Prime95
.

Test your temps with Speedfan
.

Please post back with your results after each of these test and feel free to post any questions you have.

This is going to be a process of elimination. We will try to eliminate each possibility until we find the real cause.

I see that you have AVG anti-virus installed. AVG has been know to cause BSOD's on some Win 7 systems. I recommend that you uninstall it and replace it with MSE for troubleshooting purposes. Once your system is running smoothly, you can reinstall it and see it it causes a problem. However, I recommend that you stick with MSE or Avast. Uninstall AVG using this tool >Info > Tool (32bit) - Tool (64 bit) If you have AVG identity protection installed, uninstall it using this tool > Info > Tool

You have several obsolete drivers that may well be contributing to the problem. Win 7 does not like outdated drivers.

You need to especially concentrate on updating the drivers whose dates are in the bold font.

How To Find Drivers:

- The links to most of the drivers are listed in the code box below. Please use the links there to see what info I've found about those drivers.
- search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- visit the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware/program to get the latest drivers (DON'T use Windows Update or the Update driver function of Device Manager).
- if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone will try and help you locate the appropriate program.

- - The most common drivers are listed on this page: Driver Reference
- - Driver manufacturer links are on this page: Drivers and Downloads

Thanks for your replies Carl,

- I have run Memtest for 12 hours with no errors
- Disk check with no errors, both with MS Disk Check and HDTune
- Flashed the bios (even though there were no updates for it)
- Updated drivers
- Run virus scan (no viruses)
- Ran Prime95 for 12 hours with no errors or overheating
- Constantly monitored temps and fans on Speedfan, no issues

I will wait and see if the bluescreen occurs again, it has only happened to me twice and with long spans of time between

Good job of following suggestions. Maybe one of those steps eliminated the cause. I surely hope so. Obsolete drivers alone can create crashes. Did you uninstall AVG and install MSE?

I'm a little reluctant to because I hear some of the others might slow your computer down

I have not found that to be the case. If you are reluctant to try MSE, try Avast (free) it is very compatible with Win 7. However, you can wait to see if you have any more crashes.

I agree with Carl. MSE is possibly the fastest AV you can get...
