They changed the terminology on you, here too...-- operated under the control of a plugboard, now formally referred to as a control panel.
Plugboard implies something "manual", and "old-fashioned", and that real "work" was involved...
The fact that they were 'removable' and could be 'swapped' in and out, no longer refers to the "plug" part...
They use "control" for that part now..
Great post.! I`m new at 64bit OS. I've started with W7 on my 2GB RAM Computer and it worked excellent. I went on and buy 2 more GB, and almost felt no different, so I agree with the comment that 4GB is not necessary.

mmmmm you just have to go with X64. intel is really driving the marketplace. so if you want to go the way of 16 bit apps then stay with X86. It will leave you in the dust when X128 arrives. I do love those moon lander games though. So what bothers you about X64 i bit the bullit and X64 runs great..... hop aboard.....
I started work for IBM in 1963 and i worked on the old accounting machines like the 403. 407 and 604 before graduating to the first business computer the 1401. I could write books on the development of computers but i enjoy being a beta tester for M$, and going out in the woods with my yellow lab. She is the love of my life with computers being second. I think i got my priorites in order. But i love both.I agree with fakeasdf that the thread will evolve as it evolves. I also agree with ChuckR that there is a lomtick of confusion regarding 64-bit platforms (to deftly combine the hard with the soft and use an ambiguous reference to clockworks).
Intel's initial implementation did suck and IBM's choices did put us on the road to here. Windows is not the grace of computer science and neither is linux - so long as they are implemented on current mass-produced technology. As the saying goes, "We have to sell a lot of VCRs first". Historically, it takes 30 years for a new technology to be fully incorporated into an economy. We are approaching that threshold. What lies ahead will be built from what we have at hand. And 64-bit will be archaic in time.
If ChuckR could afford the time, it would be nice to see how his perspective has developed. I am not 100% certain that he uses a GUI. You know, he did use to pull vacuum tubes and run patch cables (no, not ethernet - a very new development from his perspective). I imagine that he has used tin foil to complete a circuit a time or two.
In the meantime, put up the good fight. Windows 7 sux.
