Yahoo is fine for Free Stock market quotes and EOD (End of day data -- Open, High, Low,Close and Volume) .

Other than that Google still has it -- but it's definitely getting worse
for example sometimes I click on a search, it gives what appears to be an answer and when you click on the link you get a load of stuff nothing to do with your original search.

Also the ads just seem to become more and more intrusive -- I HATE web advertising -- fortunately I can skip most of it but you sometimes get those little square boxes which throw up stuff just over where you are reading - now that's 100% irritating.

A Google competitor would certainly be OK -- No corporation ever lasts forever-- even the Roman Empire and the "1,000 year Reich" all passed their sell by dates (in the case of the last one thank goodness) well before their "anticipated lifetime".

    Cheers

Microsoft will be releasing their forthcoming kumo search engine updating live search in the very near future. I think Google will be more concerned about that than some small ugly site.

Swarfega - the developer of the site, Wolfram research, is the same company that develops the Maple mathematics software. Here is a good read on the guy behind the company:

Stephen Wolfram - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

He's definitely weird, and eccentric, but a genius nonetheless. And if he can get some serious venture capital backing to put up even a single data center like Google has, you can bet your arse that Google is gonna be worried.

Look at all the media promotion of Twitter and how big it got in such short time. Google wants to partnership with Twitter because its dominating. Johngalt you were thinking the same thing I was.

Lordbob75, Yes google is becoming more than a search engine. Creepy stuff when you think about it:
    People Tracking Software
    Google Earth
Google retaining user searches (read so many stories about this)
Google will OWN the new smart grid coming out (power monitoring of citizens)
Google will host all American Medical records (obama wants this..will wind cause more harm than good)
Google street cameras in NYC and other parts of the world.
Yea I'm not happy about this "wanting to run the world" google crap.

Nobody can predict what will happen with computers but as long as Google keeps things simple and just points us in the right direction as always, it will have no worries.
