One would hope that Microsoft is capable of learning from their past mistakes and doesn't take the bait. MSE seems to be a good product that does not have a high overhead. I used to be a strong Norton fan but this product has gone down hill and has been really bad (IMOP) since Norton 2005 (I paid for it and then uninstalled it 1 month later, worst AV product I have ever used).
Again and Again I have people asking for help because their pc's are just crawling and more often than not I find Norton on these machines eating up their ram/cpu. Solution: Uninstall Norton and install MSE or Avast, machines working as expected again and the client is very happy.
Note to Microsoft: Quit while you are ahead and invest your money in something else that actually matters, You are already far ahead of Norton at this time. | My System Specs |

Assuming this rumor is true:
I doubt if this happens it they would do away with MSE.
But perhaps, offer MSE as the free version as it is now, and Nortons version as a paid 'upgrade' for more features.
That or planning on bundling Nortons IS with certain version of Windows, like Home Premium and up.
In hopes of increasing sales. Just a thought. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Custom (Self Build) OS Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit CPU Intel Core i7 2700k Motherboard eVGA P67 SLI Memory 8GB Mushkin Redline Ridgebacks @1866 Graphics Card EVGA GTX570 SC Sound Card XiFi Titanium HD Monitor(s) Displays LG W2453V Screen Resolution 1920x1080 Keyboard Saitek Cyborg PSU Seasonic x750 Case Corsair 600T SE White Cooling eVGA Superclocked CPU Cooler Hard Drives Intel 320 80GB -- Intel X25-V 40GB --WD Black 1TB x2 -- WD Blue 640GB Antivirus Kaspersky Browser IE Other Info LG BD/DVD |

Well folks perfect isn't perfect when looked at from a different angle. No operating system works perfect for everybody in every way they think it should. I have been using Windows sense 95 skipping over Vista and now have Windows 7. Windows 7 Home Premium 64 is the best I have ever used but not perfect. As far as the rumor of the BIG Microsoft buying Symatec it makes sense to me. From my understanding M/S is going very big into cloud computing programs where security is very much lacking. If my understanding is correct then promoting cloud program with added security just adds up. I can't believe a company would use something like Office Pro 2011 with all that information stored in a cloud with today's security for cloud computing. The need and desire for more security is growing by leaps and bounds. One might also keep in mind that as of last Wednesday the President talked about a 100% tax wright off for companies capital investment to grow there business. In Microsoft case that would be many millions of savings maybe billions. | My System Specs | | Computer type PC/Desktop System Manufacturer/Model Number Home made Desktop OS Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. personally i don't care if it is or isn't true. i for one will never use security software from the same company that makes my os. neither norton or microsoft i trust, and together OMG. the fist thing i do after i install windows and my drivers is remove and disable all of mirosofts security software and features, and replace it with what i run. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number self built OS Win 7 X32 CPU e8400 Motherboard asus rampage formula rev. 1 Memory 3.5 gigs ddr2 Graphics Card geforce 9500 gtx Monitor(s) Displays 26" Screen Resolution 1680 x 1050 |

I for one would love to see it happen (assuming everything was done right).
Norton isn't the bloat it once was.

i will have to say why do i have the feeling that microsoft will make a super av and that are free alredy installed on windows , you just choose if you want to use it
as for microsoft they will make more money , becuase : 1. people buy software that are very secure , look at mac or linux
2. some persons dont want to waste time removing viruses and buying av's after they just bought a very expensive windows
3. becuase there's always a 3 , i mean think about it like you just install windows fresh and you have a very strong av installed on it , it updates with windows or when new defenisions arrive low on ram (look at windows defender you dont even know its there) has a firewall and are very good with ie , like zonealarm forcefeild ! with a comodo type of hips
and kaspekys type of realtime scaning with maleware bytes on demand scaning and website blocker (mainly zonealarm forcefeild does that ) a big mail security side on all mail apps like outlook , windows live mail , incredimail etc.
i mean like stop the virus before it can get to you
like a big security center inside control panel that does not wate time or money and does not disturb you all of that inside your control panel wich you can step by step adjust and leave like that, instal your apps browse the web play games and forget that you even have a av !
thats what i thought windows should have done a long time ago ! | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number msi OS windows 7 ( ultimate) /xp (home) CPU celeron 2.66 ghz single core Motherboard msi g41tm-p31 Memory 1 gb Graphics Card ati radeon had 4300/4500 Sound Card via on board express 6.1 Monitor(s) Displays dual monitor Screen Resolution 2048x780 Keyboard mecer 6301 multimedia Mouse varbatim PSU - Case Handel case from intel Cooling 3 fans Hard Drives 80 gb + 13 gb + 80 gb Internet Speed normal Other Info headphones - genius direct3d + vibration |

saakeman, if macs and linux had as much of the market as windows does i can guarantee you that there would be just as many viruses, trojans, and spyware for them as there is for windows right now. i agree most peeps will want to set it and forget it, but there is the other end where we like to have full control over eberything on the sys including manually doing all updates regardless of what they are for. i actually can see this merger happening mainly for one reason, both companies are very good at buying up tech that can hurt their core business and either burying it, or letting it fall so out of date that it no longer works with the current os's out.

but what if you just learn do forget windows security
and just now and then going into control pannel for checkup of the updates and that demand scans have been done
