Nice to hear from you, Dinesh!

Today started the Kaamos back where I'm from, in Lapland. Word Kaamos comes from Sami language, spoken by Sami people in arctic regions of Scandinavia. It means a polar night; after sun was set yesterday, it's not rising until end of January. It's a two month long night, opposite to our two months long midnight sun period in the summer when sun is almost two months visible and we have daylight 24/7.

A dear friend sent an email today, sent at 1:30 PM. It was -31°C (-24°F), snow depth 30+ centimeters (12 inches) and pitch dark, he wrote, telling also about the traditional party yesterday. Friends gathered together to say Good Bye to Sun (normally we Lapps need no excuse to party, but this one is good).

It's two times a year I miss home especially much, after 25+ years living abroad. The last day to see the Sun, end of November, when we used to sit outside with friends, drinking Glögg and watching sunrise and sunset within 40 minutes, preparing for the long Polar Night. And the same party in end of January, first appearance of the Sun.

    A Lappish joke:

A suspect is questioned by police. Suspect's alibi is not clear, so the questioning police officer asks:
-"Where did you spend the night between November 29th and January 23rd?"

Life is Good! Mac OSX sux! :)

P.S. Thanks to all your dear fellow geeks for the supporting comments regarding my recovery.
That sounds real cool Kari...almost other worldly! Where I live, we don't really even have seasons...at least not like in other parts of the country. So what you describe sounds so foreign (no pun intended). And Kari, I can't tell you how much better it is reading your posts and the replies than posting in the get well soon Kari thread. That had a very sad connotation whereas the new posts are more slapstick, lol. Glad you are recovering as fast as you have, and that your personality remains unchanged. Take care.

    Thanks, A Guy.

The village of Kevo in Utsjoki, Lapland, Finland is over 400 kilometers (about 250 miles) north of Polar Circle, so we really have a Polar night there and Midnight Sun in the summer; south Lapland, closer to the the Arctic Circle there's also Polar Night but it's not so completely dark because of the twilight hours, dusk and dawn.

Kari's Completely Useless Trivial Information, part 19,246: Finnish region of Lapland is 98,984 km2 (38,217.9 square miles); as such it would be the 38th biggest if it was a state in the USA, a tiny bit smaller than Kentucky (37th), bigger than following Indiana, Maine, South Carolina and others.

In this area lives only 184,000 people, an average of 1.9 / km2 (4.8 / square mile), compared for instance to American average of 32 / km2 (83 / square mile) or Californian 90.49 / km2 (234.4 / square mile)

Today I'm feeling good and quite lucky.

I still have both my parents who at 85 years old still have their health, I was at a family party yesterday and caught my dad having fun, and this is after spending two hours making a toy box for his great grandson, that left him, allegedly, unable to move.
