    30 year battery life!

What would you say if I told you that thanks to the US Air Force Research Laboratory we could have laptop batteries that would last for 30 years without the need of a recharge? You would say I am crazy but this is exactly what we need to talk about now. They invented a special betavolic power cell that is built from semiconductors with the use of radioisotopes as energy sources. Radioactive material ends up decaying over time and as a result it emits beta particles. They transform into electric power that can power laptops for previously unimagined periods of time:

So instead of the laptop outlasting the battery, the battery will outlast the computer

For all what its worth. I cannot say that I would feel extremely comfortable, having radio isotopes so close to my reproductive organs

They were looking into this when I was serving in 2006 in 29 Palms, since the need for mobile, reliable battlefield technology just keeps increasing.

    I wouldn't use it, though.

I would like to see the estimated cost of such a battery.

    What about harmful beta radiations?

The entire laptop will be encased in lead and weight in at about 37 pounds.

You're kidding me right? I'll pass.

Anyways, this article doesn't seem too credible..

    We have a non-thermal reactions
    Um.. What?

The story is written in peculiarly convoluted prose, but appears to be saying that a breakthrough in nuclear energy technology means that we'll all be running around with magic batteries in mobile and laptop, in "two to three years". They'll be perfectly safe, will save the world, and will probably last longer than you will.

Sadly, no. As with the best techno-rubbish, there is a story in there, but you'll be pootling around the skies in jetpacks before you're powering your Dell from neutron decay.
