Facebook Groups Prank Shows Problem with Default Opt-In

Facebook Groups Prank Shows Problem with Default Opt-In

Facebook held a major press event this week to introduce some significant changes to the site, including Facebook Groups. While the intent of Facebook Groups is to enhance privacy and provide users with more control over how information is shared, the implementation of the concept leaves a little to be desired.

I have my privacy settings jacked up so that friends can see additional contact info, like my phone number, but to someone just looking at my profile, you really can't see jack if you're not my friend, except my profile pics.

As with so many of facebook's issues on privacy the idea here is not the issue - your real friends are not likely to abuse this option - but how many of your "facebook Friends" are real friends?

With the inevitable competition that takes place to have more friends than others, people end up accepting friendships from a friend of a friend of a friend ..... and so on.

The case stated as a prank here can have detrimental results as many employers now scan social networks for information on employees and potential employees, the addition of your name to the wrong group, intentional or not, could cause a lot of problems - rumours do not have to be true to have a result
