Paul,
As the new laptop is likely to come pre-installed with Windows 7 don't forget to point them in the direction of our tutorials here - They beat the rest out there
Also, if they are complete beginners then there are basic CLAIT courses available from your local council - these are often free or only nominal cost, check your local library or council website | My System Specs | | Computer type PC/Desktop System Manufacturer/Model Number Real World Computing (Me + a little help from Acer) OS Windows 7 Ultimate x64 + x86 + Windows 8 x64 CPU AMD Phenom II X6 1035T 2.6 GHz Motherboard Aspire M3400 Memory 4Gb PC10600 DDR3 1333 MHz Graphics Card NVIDIA GeForce 315 512MB Sound Card OnBoard - Realtek High Definition Audio Monitor(s) Displays Philips 32" HDTV, (HDMI) + 26" TV (VGA) Screen Resolution 1920 x 1080 @60Hz + 1360 x 768 @60Hz Keyboard Microsoft Wireless 800 or Stock Acer, (depends where I sit) Mouse Microsoft Wireless 800 or Stock Acer, (depends where I sit) PSU Stock (400W) Case Acer M3400 Cooling Stock Hard Drives 500 GB Seagate ST3500418AS SATA II

You might have seen the "Video Professor" series. They get advertised a lot. I would be leery of anything on TV advertised as "free". Either you're going to end up paying $10 S&H for a worthless "free" CD or there is some other catch. videoprofessor.com | WOT Reputation Scorecard | WOT Web of Trust
(Read the comments for an idea of what "free" gets you.)

(EDIT: Can't - too soon...)
I think the best way to learn anything is to ask specific questions about specific problems. As was said above, stay away from Video Professor. It is a scam. They say they are free but you have to give them a credit card number for the "low handling fee" and they end up charging about $60 on your card. I have developed classes for my computer club that may be useful. The people in my club are mainly older folks with only very basic PC knowledge. The classes come as PDFs and Videos (more than 3 hours worth). You can download the zip folder from here ( System Facilities Class.zip - Windows Live ). It contains all the links to the videos and to a lot of other educational material. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number HP, Dell, Gateway, Toshiba - 4 laptops and 2 desktops OS Vista, Windows7, Mint Mate, Zorin, Windows 8 CPU from 1.6GHz Duo to i7 Monitor(s) Displays 2x HP w2207 Keyboard with trackball - no mices Mouse Trackball mice Hard Drives 5x HDD, 7x SSD, 12x Externals Internet Speed DSL 6000 |
