The great Captain Beefheart has died! A very sad day indeed. I'm at work and can't post a tune but what an amazing contribution he made to popular music in his relatively short recording career.
Apparently an art critic told him that he would never be credible as an abstract painter unless he gave up the Magic Band. So he did.
Nontheless his early blues based work with Ry Cooder and the band, were and are a seminal influence and his later avant garde stuff with Zappa and the, to me, impenetrable, Trout Mask Replica remains the standard by which other experimental music is judged.
As Tom Waits said: "Once you've heard Beefheart, it' hard to wash him out of your clothes. It stains, like coffee or blood"
this is one of the best albums ever made - by anyone at any time.....
a superb example of progressive rock, the bassline and the drumming are momentous and the whole thing rattles along at one hell of a pace....
you name it, it's all in there, jazz, folk, blues, rock, old-english madrigals and the maddest lyrics you ever heard..
- a fabulous work..!!
