    Why vBulletin?

I just noticed that this forum is powered by vBulletin 3.8.5. A simple right click then view source revealed this to me. What is so special about vBulletin that a webmaster would want to pay so much for it? Seems a bit of a waste when there are some really good free ones out there like MyBB and PHPBB.

Flexiblility, scalability, familiarity. It costs under $500. Plus there is a new comer Xen.

    A very valid question :)

As a previous user of PHPbb, MyBB, vBulletin and soon to be XenForo I found that there were a lot more controls with vBulletin, allowing for greater management of you forum. The other plus side is the subscription gives you access to professional addons and support as opposed to a user driven forum with ideas & tweaks

Saying that, there's absolutely nothing wrong with PHPbb or MyBB and it's all down to the users personal preference.

Ken is right XenForo is the way forward...

You get what you pay for and vb3.x is the best forum software currently available.

Xenforo once matured a little will be the future.
