Not going to find a 6 core Intel for that price...which I know that you know. The top of the line Intel chips are always quite pricey.
However, the question is whether you really need those extra 2 cores?? As you can get a solid 4 core Intel that will perform onpar or even outperform the AMD 6 cores...for the same price if not for a lower price. Just because it has more cores does not mean it's better. In fact, so many apps still don't take advantage of anything over a dual core...so 4 or 6 really doesn't matter much.
So far the discussion has been very civil. I appreciate that.
I'm an intel man. Dassault CATIA is only certified with intel, so that's what I gotta use. Given the choice, I'd take whatever gave me the best bang for my buck. I've changed camps in the past (even a Cyrix once) and would do so again.
They're the hottest P4s to run weren't they? I was living in the tropics at the time, ambient room temperature averaged >30C, and the machine was at >65C idle. Other than that, nothing wrong - in fact I was pretty happy with that computer other than the ungodly high temps and extremely unfortunate tendency to emergency shutdown due to heat issues at full load. None of my other desktops ever got that hot.
No idea man, actually from what friends told me over the years I was under the impression AMD chips ran cooler and were generally better bang-for-buck. Main reason I stuck with Intels was that they usually led the high-end section. Awesome sig btw.
AMD just cause. I've always had them and never had an issue. Same reason I use ATI (now AMD) because I just always had them and they always worked, so I've had no reason to change. Price is a plus too. My Phenom II x4 965 handles everything and cost like £140.
I was using low end prescott and got too high of an temperature (of normal processor) on a normal room.
But it didn't explode so eh... who cares. xD
I'm personally Intel fanboy.
And Nvidia. xD
I have Intel's in my laptops.
Core 2 Duo (2.2) Vista -------
i5-430M (2.27 boosts to 2.53) Win7 -------
what would be the comparable AMD chips?
