Actually it isn't that much of a surprize when you see news reports like...
NASA: Shuttle carrying humanoid robot delayed

Robotics has moved along swiftly over the last few decades especially with goals of unmanned probes sent to Mars and further by NASA. When you look at how small things will be in the pc world in a few short years with miniturization of components plus prosetics for those who suffered various injuries the robotic bran becomes the real challenge over the outside appearances.

If you look at the more recent sci-fi movies and series the special effects and lifelike appearances of manicans shows the "really alive" look to fake aliens, monsters, and other "things" are made to look as real as possible. Now apply the outside to the advancements in robotics over the years to arrive at... "she looks so alive!" :)

For the record I'd like to note how the prototypes are almost always female if they aren't genderless. On a totally unrelated note many technological advances have been spurred by the adult entertainment industry. More storage? Bandwidth? Faster internet? More efficient image compression algorithms?

I'm not entirely certain we have nothing to worry about.

There's definitely going to be many varied markets for something like this.

There a few male versions, even kids - but young females are certainly the most prolific.

Finally, the old joke about 'the off switch' has become a reality

Besides all of the other "old sayings" that could be tossed in here as well the reality of it is how little is revealed in the video there as far as actual responses. You barely hear a peep from that one while the one NASA is planning to launch wouldn't likely be so much of a "dummy"?!
That also shows that things are far more complicated then they first seem since the programming still have to be extensive just to see a few small responses by artificial means.

You can believe anything they send up will have to be far more sophisticated over the brief demo someone posted on Youtube. More then likely a great deal of that however will be medical in a totally weightless environment where their's will be hooked up with an endless number of sensors and compared to things prior to launch.

There was a show on the Discovery Channel this weekend. I want to stress the point that I only saw the Previews and did not watch the show. It was called "Taboo". It was about people who withdraw from society and live their whole lives around dolls. I am sure that not much more description is needed to know what the show was about. == Now that is freaky.
