This day is celebrated on the anniversary of the ending of the First World war.

    "They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
    We will remember them."

    Lest we forget

I remember you pop. I still do not understand in this world where we can sit with a computer on our lap, that someone thinks an acceptable way to deal with disagreements is by killing. I realise that there will always be someone stronger who will try to take by force, and i struggle to know how to teach this lesson to my children. To all those who have died for the fight for true freedom I hope one day this world can make your sacrifice somehow meaningful. Lest we forget.

Thanks to all the men and women who have served, and given their life, for their country.

    I salute you.

Master Sergeant Andrew D. Minton, USAF retired, 26 years. Proud to have served.

    In Flanders Fields

    by John McCrae, May 1915

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
    In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
    In Flanders fields.

Inspiration for the poem — In Flanders Fields

During the Second Battle of Ypres a Canadian artillery officer, Lieutenant Alexis Helmer, was killed on 2 May, 1915 by an exploding shell. He was a friend of the Canadian military doctor Major John McCrae.
John was asked to conduct the burial service owing to the chaplain being called away on duty elsewhere. It is believed that later that evening John began the draft for his famous poem 'In Flanders Fields'.

This just arrived from my Senator in DC... I keep him informed about issues he needs to pay attention to for our state.

    Dear Friends,

Veterans Day is a time to reflect upon the great sacrifices that our men and women in uniform have made and continue to make to protect our country and preserve our freedom. America's soldiers are our best and brightest, serving with courage and distinction, and they deserve our unwavering recognition and support.
Today also marks an opportunity to renew our promise to America's veterans and their families and help them achieve the American Dream. Our commitment to our troops must not end with their tour of duty.
As a member of the United States Senate I have worked hard to ensure that both our active soldiers and our veterans receive the resources and services they deserve. I will continue to support measures that honor our veterans, and I will fight to provide better health care, retirement benefits and educational opportunities for our nation's heroes.
The author Cynthia Ozick said: "We often take for granted the very things that most deserve our gratitude." Our men and women in uniform deserve our utmost gratitude, and may we never take their sacrifices and their heroism for granted. So this Veterans Day, I join all Arkansans in thanking our veterans for their courage, valor, and service to our country, and ask that they remain in our thoughts and prayers throughout the year.

    Sincerely,
    Senator Mark Pryor
