    specialize, specialize and more specialization.

IT jobs pay well, once you've put in the time and effort to work your way into a specialized role... ie, network engineer, dba... IT manager.

You will start near or at the bottom no matter how much 'education' you get... It's up to you on how far you travel up the corporate ladder.

err, surely you can only specialise in one thing? that's what makes it special.

@Genesis4455 - pick up a local copy of a situations-vacant newspaper or IT magazine to see what different jobs are paying.

i would say graphic design is more fun (more chicks too ), but networking more useful and profitable.

but what do i know? i just help friends (and friends of friends) and small local businesses out for little money, and am not a professional at all...

best of luck with your career, whatever you choose - you're still young and have a wide open road in front of you - go for it!

the trouble is advertising yourself, i think.

somehow your customers need to know about you - if you don't work for a company, you'll have to spend more time marketing and selling yourself than actually designing.

generally, companies would rather pay another company for banners and such, rather than random individuals.

it sucks, but that's how it is.

again, i don't actually know, but i reckon that's it better to start working for a company, they can pay to train you up, and give you valuable experience. once you've earned and saved up some money and know the industry better, then you can break free, start working for yourself, and if you're successful and good at what you do, you can set your own company up and start hiring your own staff.

but then again, who knows what things are going to be like in the future?
