PM etiquette

When I PM another member, I can see all the previous PMs that were sent to that member. Does this not defeat the intent of a private message.
I am not personally bothered by that practice, but I wonder whether that is Ok with everybody else. What does private mean then.

Are you sure you mean PM and not VM, VM's can be seen by all but Private Messages are only visible between the two people having the conversation.

John, I guess I do not know the difference of PM and VM. I noticed it when I thank someone for reps by clicking on his name in the rep.
And I see the messages the member received, not the ones he/she sent.

The one's when you click on the name and goto the persons profile are Visitor Messages, to send a PM you can click on the link as show below.

You have private messages and public messages. What is a VM?

Never mind got it now.

Visitor messages - the ones on your profile page.

I understand this. But I am on another point - the fact that messages that were sent to the member are visible when I send a "thank you" message from the member name that shows in the reps.

Thank you's for reps are usually sent as Visitor Messages (Public Messages), usually visable to any member that visits your profile, unless you specifically send as a Private message (PM) Then they are only seen by you & the other member

In theory at least it shouldn't matter. You should only post something on VM which you are happy to be publically available, and seen by everyone. If you don't want the whole world to see, you should use the PM feature.
