    I don't understand.
    PDF is a free format.

Now, if you are talking about free PDF viewers, then that is a different thing entirely- and there are many!

My favorite is: PDF-XChange Viewer - Download

pdf is a format and a file format does not have any rights to deal with..

Do you want another editor or a viewer.?

for a viewer Foxit Reader is awesome.

If you just want to turn your favourite documents into PDFs, you can use a virtual PDF printer. E.g. create your document using the free OpenOffice or any favourite editors of your choice, then "print" it as a PDF. This is what we use here, PrimoPDF.

PrimoPDF website (PrimoPDF is free, their other software NitroPDF is trialware but you don't need that unless you need the other features)

The cool thing is, it's a "printer". Which means not just documents, but anything you can attempt to print in Windows. Email, websites, images, spreadsheets, presentations ... anything that can be displayed and printed, really. Hope that was useful.

    Au contraire!

There are proprietary file formats. For example, MS Word, MS Excel, MS Access, et al...
Paint Shop Pro formats, Adobe PhotoShop, Corel Draw, Sony , a gazillion audio formats, Ad infinitum...

Formats may be patented and only used under the rules imposed by those patents.

PDF, on the other hand, is not proprietary; albeit begun by Adobe (I think)
    PDF: Portable Document Format

The whole point of its creation was to have a file format that was portable; meaning, that it would be accessible across many different systems.
Examples: Windows, MAC, & Linux, to mention three major OS's.

The bottom line is that PDF Readers, Writers, Creators, etc, may be Free- or not.

There is a lot of software out there that will read and/or create PDF files for you. Some are free. Others are not.

The choice is yours as to which one you choose to use. They all have their individual, unique pluses and minuses.

    And just to go a step further, if you want to convert a PDF file back to say an editable Word document there is a very simple free program here ;
Free PDF to Word Doc Converter - easy and powerful pdf converter software.
Won't work if the PDF has been encrypted though!
