    When is Torrenting okay

Now we ALL know that Torrenting is illegal period, no buts. However is it okay to torrent something you already have, or if an album you bought gets re-released with additional songs. If you bought something once, why should you have to spend more money just to get a few additional tracks?

Another example is the Service Pack 1, it's been Torrented, we all know it has been judging from the topic up there, does that make it wrong? I don't think it does because it's going to be free once it gets released through Windows Updates.

Now me personally, I'll torrent a CD if I can't find it anywhere in the US, if I find it on iTunes or Amazon or any other kind of legit site that's where my first stop is, if I can find it in the store that's my second stop. But if I need to import it from Japan or something, that's personally not something I'm willing to do.

Torrenting isn't illegal. It depends what you download via torrenting to make it illegal or legal.

Downloading anything off torrents like music, movies, games etc is illegal.

There are quite a lot legal torrents to download around the web.

I like Miro. It's a really nice media player, but it is also a well working torrent client. It has a vast database of legal torrents you just surf like in a browser and choose what you want to download. The nice thing is, you know if you see a torrent in Miro, you also know it's legal.

Another example of legal torrents: I subscribe an IPTV service from my native Finland to here in Germany. I can watch this service normally over an IPTV set-top box connected to my TV, or from any computer. The service stores all shows on every channel I subscribe for four weeks, so I can watch them whenever I want to. I can also download my playlist as torrent by going to my playlist page and adding the complete playlist to Miro. This converts all shows I've chosen to torrents, which Miro then downloads automatically.

So, torrents are not automatically always illegal.

    Hi there
that's not true either -- stuff INCLUDING MUSIC etc which IS in the public domain is 100% legal to be downloaded via torrents etc.

Other stuff which might be privately owened is perfectly 100% legal to download if the copyright owner gives permission -- often true in the case of a lot of Educational Courses, Bible notes etc etc.

A lot of Classical music is also in the public domain too.

    Not true, whatsoever.

I use torrents when downloading new Linux ISO's. When the new version of a Linux distribution is released, the vendors site is totally swamped and downloads crawl. For this reason, it's fastest to use a torrent. This is absolutely not illegal.

I feel safe using torrents for this because I can (and do) compare the MD5 hash with what the vendor has posted, so I know for a fact that the file hasn't been tampered with.

Pioneer One is a TV show, funded by donations, that is shared legally via torrents. You can get episode 1 and 2, free and legal, right here:
