Crude, But Nice

The first one I ran was a DEC Rainbow. No hard disk, ran from floppies. You only had a few interrupts and they were not shared, and you assigned them manually.

My first computer was a Commodore64. That's what I had when the first modem came out, at a whopping 9.6 Baud. There really was no internet. There were bulletin boards where you could call and write a message and leave it there. That was a lot of fun. I could hook the modem up and dial the number. Then go to the kitchen, make a sandwich and get a drink and make it back before it connected. And we thought we had hit the big time then.

BBS

Yeah, I remember the bulletin boards. To this day I sometime refer to a "forum" as a board.

You geeks remember how "fast" it was to download something those days, using a 1200 baud modem (and even 300 baud). For your youngsters out there, 1200 baud modem could give you roughly 4.5 Kbps DL speed...

I tried to do "serious" things on a DEC PDP 11 which is now on a par with the lowest end netbook --- or maybe digital watch.
I think with the age categories it may be better in our touchy feely politically correct society (which is kidding itself) to add a few more higher increment levels.
