Hi fellow Canadians (and everybody else too),

Here is a news article that will make a hole in your wallet :

The federal government is being formally asked to overturn a CRTC decision that will force smaller internet service providers to charge similar usage-based fees as Bell, Rogers and Shaw.

Jean-François Mezei, a Montreal-based computer consultant, filed a petition to the Governor in Council late Wednesday, asking the government to overrule an October decision by Canada's telecommunications regulator.

That ruling gave Bell approval to implement usage-based billing on its wholesale customers, mostly smaller internet service providers that rent portions of Bell's network to re-sell to customers through their own retail internet packages.

In the days where everything, more and more, get downloaded over Internet (talking about legal offers here) like games, movies and series get purchased and downloaded at the cost of several gigabytes, they are putting us a cap to make us use LESS the Internet. If you use it to play online games, download LEGAL games, stream a purchased HD movie and download purchased music, you are gonna pay from your wallet a lot. This concerns ALL ISPs in the country. For exemple : Shaw, Bell Canada, Rogers, Videotron (Qc; My ISP) and all the wholesale distributors. This doesn't include your family's usage of the Internet using your home network!!

Is cable Internet affected by the CRTC's decision to implement usage caps ?

For those of you who don't know here in Canada the CRTC (Canadian Radio-television Telecommunications Commission) implemented a usage cap of 25GB per month on DSL, taking effect on March 1st. If you go over that limit you're paying outrageous fees.

Currently I'm with an indie ISP called Teksavvy in Ontario. I've got DSL and I'm seriously considering switching over to cable Internet soon. As of March 1st 2011, the limit on DSL will be 25GB per month. Which is a joke because I can get through that in about a week.

My question is, will cable Internet be affected by this ? I want to switch to cable and get an unlimited plan. I may be paying more than what I'm currently paying for DSL but it would be well worth it.

This is nonsense and the CRTC should be annihilated and or whoever came up with this stupid idea of implementing usage caps. They say Canada is the only country in the industrialized world that pays absurd fees for Internet.

Considering the digital age we live in, it does not make sense for them to do this. What were they thinking ?

I have extreme-dsl here in Saskatchewan, and it is still and always has been unlimited (up or down), using Sasktel.

Cable here has always had limits.

The DSL/ADSL rule will be applied tomorrow here in Quebec. I don't know for the rest of the country. But NO providers will be spared. Teksavvy included.

My extreme-DSL, with SaskTel - Wireless, Digital TV, High Speed Internet, Phone Service, and More - SaskTel, gives me 24/7/365 downloads... with no limits down-or-up per month.

I download my share of 700-meg video files..! (one 640-gig, two 1-TiB drives).

I pay 54.95 per month for 1275 kBps (1.2 megs+ download, 100-kBps upload). A 700-meg file from a good source will be on my hard-drive in 25-minutes. Just enough time to make supper.

Sasktel, they/my ISP are offering more than other ISP's in my province, and/or Alberta.

Rodgers & Telus Mobility rent the Sasktel cell towers in my province. BUT, they only rent the most popular towers. So if you/I are traveling non-popular highways... they won't be there for you.

Plus my Sasktel will give me coverage with a dongle-usb-stick.

Sometimes a local provider tries harder to keep their customers, than some country-wide provider...

Without high-speed....... there is no use to have the internet. I will no-way go back to dial-up speed...!!!

It is sad when "BIG Business" always seems to get their way.....grrrr!

I was on BBS's..... that what we used before the "internet" was available to the public. Early 90's the net came to "us". I remember using Internet-Explorer-1.0, and Eudora for my email.

Now another good thing will get choked by big-business..... all the the name of money/profit.

People, we need to do our best to stop this if possible..!

great stuff! I posted this on another website I frequent and hope they will jump on the bandwagon! this sh*t has got to stop! I mean 25GB is nothing nowadays with all the LEGAL downloads we do like legit music/games/movies and also gaming and hosting takes alot of bandwith too! its totally ridiculous not to mention unfair!

I download stuff! This is why I have a second hard-drive, 1 TiB.

I have a package that I pay 54.95 per month for. It is 1,200 kBps down rate (that's 1.2-megs a second speed), and 100-kBps up. A 700-meg file in 25 minutes, when good sources are there. It has no limits as to how much I download and upload.

If this crazy policy passes, I will drop my internet speed package, for sure...

All the big-time online gamers will be affected by this too.........................
