I admit, I am an ESET NOD32 fanboy. But I do so with the very real understanding that no AV product is 100% perfect. And my loyalties vary from time to time.

But for ESET, I prefer to back the sleeper product that laughs in the face of the big names like Symantec. Laughs at their bloat, runs circles around them for performance, and runs on any Windows OS that I've ever used, without needing to buy a new subscription or "upgrade".

And heck, I can still download and install their last DOS version. Imaigne that. And yes, I have a retro PC running DOS and Windows 3.11 as a collector's piece that I rarely ever power on except to show it or dabble in a little trip down memory lane. Emulation is for wussies.

And "that's not all", in the famous words of Billy Mays (RIP, Billy). ESET has been in the business longer than the new names like Kaspersky, and just as long as companies like Grisoft and Alwil (1991-1992).

Did you know that NOD32 is written in assembly language? That's the next language level up from binary, and hence why the core of NOD32 is so darn fast and lightweight.

Hehehe, they were pretty cool. Yup, if you do want to pay for anything, MSE is a good choice for now.

Sometimes you can get NOD32 (the basic package, not the suite) for $20/year on Newegg or elsewhere when they have specials. Still, I know, it can't compare to free, hehehe.

I've been using it for a few years now and even though it costs, although it's not too bad doing the renewals, it's never let me down and I like it's small footprint.

I just use the AV part and not the suite, I like to layer my security and know that nothing is 100% but I think common sense and Safe Hex goes a long way as well

Fun that they are - the ads are spin upon spin - sad day when a great, expensive ad sells a product when a better product fails because of no advertising budget.

Ciphernemo's very interesting post with history and the explanation about the use of assembly language is, to me, much more enticing - as it actually points to a reason why I might want to use the software.

None of this of course indicates how well Eset-NOD (or any other AV proggie) actually finds malware/virii/rootkits. I know Eset has been consistently near the top of the pile, but even the independant tests are all over the place!

So hooray for the great ads.
