    inventions required..

why doesn't somebody invent a washing-machine that takes the washing-powder/liquid in cartridge form..

you know, just plug it in and let the machine do the necessary..??

I remember when the compressed tabs were popular for a while but now the concentrated liquid form is popular but could be encapsulated just like a Contac C or Tylenol Capsule to dissolve quickly in the water while the machine is filling with water just before the wash cycle begins. I'll tell you why. Tide would make their version of this cartridge, then Gain would make their version, and Tide would say theirs works better, and Gain would disagree. Tide would counter by saying that their method is the only one that can be used in Kenmore washers, and Gain would say that theirs works best because theirs works in Maytags. Ultimately, Gain would be wrong (remember, this is just an example...I don't care which is better) and Maytag would suffer cuz they bought into Gain's design.

    Remember Betamax vs. VHS.....?

    It's a slippery slope.

I know this a daft idea but why doesn't somebody invent something that looks a bit like a large mobile phone but that does some of the things a computer would do?
You could have an email function alongside the regular text messages, the ability to play videos and make your own, access to the internet via a browser in case you urgently needed to know something on the train, maybe for the crossword in your paper. Actually you wouldn't need a paper cos you could get the news on your phone so maybe you do crosswords on your phone! Maybe you could play primitive games on it as well. Perhaps you could store music on it so you could have music playing loudly in your ears as you were just walking about town. How cool would that be?
I was walking along with my dog the other day and I suddenly wondered what the current situation in Libya was and what the major rivers of the Ukraine are called. If I'd had a computer phone I could have found out there and then, as it was I had to wait until I got home. Most irritating.

Well, now I've written it down I can see that it's a non starter. After all how many of us need access to email when we're at the shopping mall? Also if it only had a three or four inch screen viewing stuff on it and reading would be hard work and typing replies would be a nightmare. Same with my queries about Libya and Ukraine. I could be standing in the car park near the canal for ages trying to type in Ukraine with my fat fingers, the dog would get bored and start gnawing my leg and the rain would have soaked us both and probably my precious phone would get wet and implode. Also, with the loud music in my ears I wouldn't hear the cries of angry motorists trying to leave the car park and would eventually be beaten to the ground by obese business men.

Oh well. It seemed a good idea. I suppose it might work with something about ten inches across but that really would be a stupid thing to have to carry around.
