Personally, the payoff for me is the satisfaction of seeing a problem resolved and surely if someone says thank you in the thread that should be enough.
I've only been using WSF for a short time and I'm struck with how much help is available here from some very knowledgeable people who do a good job and don't patronise those of us that are still learning.
Recognition is nice, but it's not the be all and end all. Helping out those who need it is the key here.
