Windows 7: Why NOT Ubunto?

So i guess most of u guys are Windows 7 lovers eh?! But for someone who doesnt game, why would Ubuntu be a bad idea?

I havent used Ubuntu but here are a couple of reasons i've heard why it would be a good idea:

- Ubuntu, unlike Windows, doesnt slow down or doesnt slow down much. Whereas Windows very quickly starts slowing down, and hanging every now and then.

- No viruses in Ubuntu

- Can get most of the softwares u need for free.

- Doesnt need softwares for maintenance

etc.

This depends on the user, windows is stable unless the user installs useless crapware then of course it will bog down the system

Free yes but most are not of 'quality' as compared to those of Windows
Who said Windows 7 needs 'maintenance', the system takes care of itself and doesn't need any more cleanup. Unless the user decides to use so called 'system tuners' which are useless
Linux too has malware but less as compared to Windows

I dual boot with Ubuntu and it's decent. There is viruses though. There's just a lack of viruses as most viruses are made for the most popular operating system (currently Windows). Think about it this way. If you wanted to steal personal details, would you make a program to accomplish this for an OS that no one uses or the one that is used by the majority of computer uses?

Windows 7 hangs only if a) you have a whole load of crap installed on your PC an/or b) you have terrible specs. The OS itself is not actually at fault. Ubuntu doesn't really have much to install which is probably why it doesn't lag as much.

Maintenance on Windows 7 is virtually automatic so I'm not entirely sure what your point is about 'software for maintenance'.

Anyway, one of the many the reasons most of us use Windows 7, is that you have a wider range of software. Ubuntu is frustratingly limited to a small amount of programs. If all the software you need is supported by Ubuntu, that's great. It's a fine alternative to Windows 7. If not, I suggest you stick with Windows 7.

Linux is malware when dealing with one of 'those' issues



Long story short - it's your PC. Install what you want.

It wouldn't be a bad idea, but not might be a great idea either. A lot depends upon you, and the software that you use and the hardware that you have.

Windows doesn't slow down that much, unless you load tons and tons of crap. Linux can do the same thing.

Linux is usually more advantageous on lower end hardware as it performs better.

There are very few and malware is very very very few and far between. For web surfing, it makes a solid platform.

As you typically can under Windows. All without piracy. Lots of open source and free apps out there.

Usually you don't have the virus apps. Overall, lots of people use Linux and just set it and forget it. Windows admins on the other hand often run maintenance routines till death...often unncessarily.


For me personally, the choice to run Linux (Ubuntu or any other flavor) usually boils down to 2 things
#1). Licensing costs. If you have 5 machines, and legally pay for Windows, it can get expensive
#2). Generally dislike for Microsoft and want something different. (And Apple is too expensive for ya).
