It wouldn't be a bad idea, but not might be a great idea either. A lot depends upon you, and the software that you use and the hardware that you have.

Windows doesn't slow down that much, unless you load tons and tons of crap. Linux can do the same thing.
Linux is usually more advantageous on lower end hardware as it performs better.

Usually you don't have the virus apps. Overall, lots of people use Linux and just set it and forget it. Windows admins on the other hand often run maintenance routines till death...often unncessarily.
For me personally, the choice to run Linux (Ubuntu or any other flavor) usually boils down to 2 things
#1). Licensing costs. If you have 5 machines, and legally pay for Windows, it can get expensive
#2). Generally dislike for Microsoft and want something different. (And Apple is too expensive for ya).
