Google buys Motorola Mobility for $12.5 bn

    From Google Blog:

Given Android’s phenomenal success, we are always looking for new ways to supercharge the Android ecosystem. That is why I am so excited today to announce that we have agreed to acquire Motorola.

The combination of Google and Motorola will not only supercharge Android, but will also enhance competition and offer consumers accelerating innovation, greater choice, and wonderful user experiences. I am confident that these great experiences will create huge value for shareholders.

That seems to be a very good news in the technology world. Basically, they want to compete with Apple's "Own hardware own software" policy.

Let's hope they don't over-compete with other Android phone makers, by trying to boost their own hardware over others. Work together against Apple!

Since they have a VERY strong history of boosting their own products over others (and currently under investigation for some of it) within their ecosystem already, I wouldn't hold out hope for the others.

This is a weird move, fueled mostly by aquisition of patents more than anything else. Not sure exactly what they think they are going to do with the hardware platform...

Back when the Nexus One was released, it was clear that Google had bit off more than they could chew, but in the defense of Android seem to be going for as much of the patents as they can.

Google have said they'll still support the other handset manufacturers just as much still. Don't think it will affect others much. At most it will just be an outlet for future Nexus devices, or we'll see more phones with stock Android on. The 17,000 or so patents that they've gained from Motorola will help all the other Android phones as well.

I really wonder how this is going to work. I know Motorola as a very structured serious company that usually does things the traditional long way. Google on the other hand - and especially Android - is a very hectic development where mostly band aids and rubber bands are being used to hold the thing together. Two very different cultures.

Problem with Android at the moment is just the constant suing against it. Getting as much patents for legislation ammo will, hopefully, be able to solidify Android a bit more.

Can't blame them considering how Apple is. Just look at them with the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and how it's come up showing that Apple might have edited the photos of the Galaxy Tab.
