This was I believe inevitable due to the long term health issues that he has.
I will be interesting to see the effect on the company as the last time his input was removed from Apple the company only just survived. The people who will now be in charge are I'm sure capable administrators, but whether they have the innovative qualities of Jobs is the big question.
Undoubtedly there will be the next few iPhones and iPads but do they have the people to make the next technological leap?
The inevitable comparisons with Bill Gates is not really relevant, due to the nature of the two businesses, Microsoft has for a long time been a more evolutionary company, due to it's customer base being so tied into the corporate world, where as Apple sell Innovation and gadgets.
I wish Steve Jobs all the best in his personal health battles but I feel that the future for apple could well be rather turbulent, only time will tell | My System Specs | | Computer type PC/Desktop System Manufacturer/Model Number Real World Computing (Me + a little help from Acer) OS Windows 7 Ultimate x64 + x86 + Windows 8 x64 CPU AMD Phenom II X6 1035T 2.6 GHz Motherboard Aspire M3400 Memory 4Gb PC10600 DDR3 1333 MHz Graphics Card NVIDIA GeForce 315 512MB Sound Card OnBoard - Realtek High Definition Audio Monitor(s) Displays Philips 32" HDTV, (HDMI) + 26" TV (VGA) Screen Resolution 1920 x 1080 @60Hz + 1360 x 768 @60Hz Keyboard Microsoft Wireless 800 or Stock Acer, (depends where I sit) Mouse Microsoft Wireless 800 or Stock Acer, (depends where I sit) PSU Stock (400W) Case Acer M3400 Cooling Stock Hard Drives 500 GB Seagate ST3500418AS SATA II

I really think in many ways that he was the heart and soul of that company, always was ... it's easy to jump to the conclusion that the further he is distanced from Apple, the harder it is for them to thrive and stay true to their original vision. But I imagine that's a bit of a paranoid view, and since I can only assume that there are lots of talented people working there, I'm sure we can still expect more great things from them in the days ahead. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Custom built/assembled myself OS Windows 8 Release Preview x64 CPU AMD Phenom II X6 1100T Black Edition Motherboard ASUS M4A87TD/USB3 Memory 8 GB Kingston HyperX DDR3 1600 Graphics Card Gigabyte Radeon HD 7950 Windforce Sound Card Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 4 Monitor(s) Displays Hanns.G HG281D 27" Screen Resolution 1920 x 1200 Keyboard Logitech G510 Mouse Razer Imperator PSU Corsair HX850W Case Gigabyte 3D Aurora 570 Cooling Stock heatsink/fan Hard Drives Western Digital Caviar Black 2 TB SATA-3
