This was I believe inevitable due to the long term health issues that he has.

I will be interesting to see the effect on the company as the last time his input was removed from Apple the company only just survived. The people who will now be in charge are I'm sure capable administrators, but whether they have the innovative qualities of Jobs is the big question.

Undoubtedly there will be the next few iPhones and iPads but do they have the people to make the next technological leap?

The inevitable comparisons with Bill Gates is not really relevant, due to the nature of the two businesses, Microsoft has for a long time been a more evolutionary company, due to it's customer base being so tied into the corporate world, where as Apple sell Innovation and gadgets.

I wish Steve Jobs all the best in his personal health battles but I feel that the future for apple could well be rather turbulent, only time will tell

(Reuters) - Silicon Valley legend Steve Jobs on Wednesday resigned as chief executive of Apple Inc in a stunning move that ended his 14-year reign at the technology giant he co-founded in a garage.
I suppose it was going to happen some day, he was a great leader for apple and will still do well as the Chairman of the company.

I really think in many ways that he was the heart and soul of that company, always was ... it's easy to jump to the conclusion that the further he is distanced from Apple, the harder it is for them to thrive and stay true to their original vision. But I imagine that's a bit of a paranoid view, and since I can only assume that there are lots of talented people working there, I'm sure we can still expect more great things from them in the days ahead.

They are doing the Frank Abagnale thing. That's an excellent move.

Does that mean Jailbreaking will be even more easy?

Given the pictures of Steve on TMZ I doubt he is long for this world. It's a sad end for a genuine visionary.
