Please help my Harddrive is making alot of loud nosies,

and I'm nervous about it. Here is the history on my computer it is 18 to 20 years old and lately the harddrive has been making a very loud noise while freezing up on me a lot my computer is running like a very slow snail I don't want to do a defrag on it because I'm afraid that it will mess up the harddrive even more. What should I do?

Copy your data off to a network share or external drive or even a thumb drive ASAP! (Unless you already have your personal files backed up regularly)

After that, start looking for a new drive and look forward to complete reinstall of everything. Or a new computer... even the cheapest computer/laptop you can get will be about 100 times better than anything "18-20 years old" :)

I would backup your data to a few floppies before the drive goes out.

Yeah, no kidding....if the PC & HD are still going after 18-20 years...considering the average lifespan of a HD nowadays is considered what...5 - 7 years?

The HD in my 7 year old laptop did the same thing, I never kept anything important on it that wasn't elsewhere so no big deal. Even jumping 7 years was a lifetime in computer progress

I was going to stick a new cheap HD in it and get it running again to give away but it got stolen instead. Hope they enjoy the dead lappy!

It is weird though, because I got a PC in 98 (Gateway) with a 20 Gig drive and although it makes that loud noise while running, it still works. I recently hooked it up to the net to confirm something and although I hadn't run it for about a year, it still fired up.....I was using that PC up until 1 1/2 years ago.....

It's running XP & no probs...maybe they knew how to build HD's better back then?
